    A reviewer

    These works of Sophocles in my opinion show the very essence classic drama, and therein, the role that fate has to play in the lives of individuals. While I myself think that we choose our own fate, classic drama, like Shakespearean drama, there is no choice in destiny only it¿s fleeting illusion. The characters experience a subtle false dichotomy: they feel they are driven to a fate that cannot be avoided yet, while no other choice is presented by Sophocles, other choices are present, if not considered by the characters. Certainly there is an alternative, such as with Oedipus, than to kill a stranger and his guard on the road because he was rude and ignored Greek customs pertaining to who has the right of way? One of the key characteristics of drama is that we, as the audience, know what is going to happen or at least all of the parts that make up the whole, obviously these works are no exception. Oedipus, Creon, and Antigone are all tragic heroes, and as such we know their fate, but how it unfolds is where we as the audience are left in the dark until it does just that. As the plot unfolds, the characters and their true natures are revealed, as is the plot. Oedipus, the noble king, is not as noble and pure as he and his kingdom thought. As the `savior¿ of his beloved people, he is tainted by his past and falls victim to `hubris¿ because of his implacable will and desires to rid his beloved city of the corruption and death that had blossomed in its heart. Corruption that is none other than himself. No longer the savior, he is the taint that has blighted and desecrated his city, and the recurring Greek `nemesis¿ befalls him. While I don¿t want to spoil everything about Oedipus and the other works, because as I mentioned above part of drama is knowing what¿s going to happen but not knowing how, I will say that a fate similar in caliber befalls the other characters tragic heroes, as was the case with many of Sophocles¿ works. I wholeheartedly recommend these plays, timeless classics much like Shakespeare¿s works and of similar merit.

    WALKER DOES IT AGAIN!...ABSOLUTELY SPELLBINDING!!

    Reading 'The Temple of my Familiar' gave me an indepth insight into the lives and relationships of humans and animals. Although I am not of African decent, I could actually find myself in the text, sympathizing with the characters. Walker removed all barriers and censorship and addressed issues which I, as a women can relate to. Through the text, she encouraged and inspired me to adopt a 'familiar' and to use this familiar to conquer my fears and control my anger. This book managed to remove me from my essential isolation and into a community of human experiences. I recommend it to everyone who is not afraid of uncovering the truths of the world... beware - the content is a little explicit and is not suitable for those under the age of 12.
