The News and Advance (Lynchburg) - Don Davis
An excellent choice for novice rose growers.
Horticulture
Antique Roses for the South is wrought from experience. It is meant to alleviate the frustrations southerners feel when they try to figure out which old roses will grow well in the hotlands. A useful book.
Fine Gardening - Harriet Jansma
This book will be helpful to rose lovers in the lower South and possibly in the milder parts of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. It will also delight all garden dreamers with its color photographs or roses growing in many landscape settings, which demonstrate the great variety of the genus and the beauty of its many forms. I recommend this beautiful book for its information and its inspiration. Every gardener needs both. The volume itself will ornament the house until the first rose bud opens.
Carolina Gardener
This book contains a wealth of information for growers interested in cultivating antique roses.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - Mark Stith
Antique Roses for the South is a treasure made even more valuable considering the challenge. When you write a book about roses, something will be lost in the translation. It certainly won't smell or look as good as the real things. Given that handicap, Dr. Welch does a superb job of telling about the history, culture and preservation of old roses that have stood the test of time in the hot and humid South.
