Children's LiteratureDid you know that ants can lift objects that are twenty times their own weight? Ants must be the weight lifters of the insect world! Children will look at ants in a different light after they have read this terrific book. Young readers will learn that ants, like children, are "social" beings. Their communities, where they live and work together, are called colonies. Children will see close up photos of a queen ant and female worker ants, which guard the colony from enemies and raise young ants. The life cycle of an ant is also described and photographed. They are pretty amazing creatures; young children should be fascinated by what ants can do. This title, which is in the publisher's "Let's Read About Insects" series, is designed for emergent readers. Text and photos are excellent. The book includes an illustration of the inside of an anthill, index, glossary, and places to go for additional information. This title would greatly enhance both home and school libraries. 2004, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, Ages 3 to 7.
