This book excels not only in explaining the cause and nature of anxiety disorders and phobias but also in describing treatments. Director of the Anxiety Treatment Center in Santa Rosa (California), Bourne emphasizes the cognitive-behavioral model of treatment but includes information on biopsychiatry, intense psychotherapy, and spirituality as additional treatment modalities. This is truly a "workbook," with exercises designed to facilitate recovery, either through private use or in conjunction with professional therapy. If your library already owns the 1990 edition and money is an object, you can probably pass on this revision, which updates the definitions of anxiety and phobia so that they conform with the new DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and includes new information on the biological causes of anxiety and related treatment developments.     Something for Everyone

    A lot of self-help books are hit or miss because they give you one or two strategies for solving a problem. Not so with this book- that's because its a workbook. This means the book takes a problem, and gives you MANY different strategies and ways of solving it. I'm a big fan of workbooks, simply because there's something for everyone. If you don't like strategy "A", well, then just move on and try strategy "B" or "C". Here's a few more specifics about the book...

    -you take a self diagnosis questionnaire to help you identify which anxiety disorder you may be dealing with

    -you will learn about the causes of anxiety disorders, including triggers and maintaining causes

    -the book proposes a multi-level comperehensive approach that addresses different levels of contributing causes (physical, emotional, behavioral, mental, interpersonal, whole-self, and spiritual

    -you can use the weekly practice records to monitor your own program

    -the bulk of the book is esentially a bunch of strategies that you can choose from, such as breathing exercises, desensitization, physical exercise (also recommend "Exercise Beats Depression" for more on that), self-talk, and visualization

    As you can see, the book takes a very comprehensive approach to getting the reader better and most are bound to find at least find one or two techniques that will really hit the nail on the head. Five stars easy.

    A Much Needed Book

    This book is extremely helpful for anyone suffering from depression, anxiety or both. Comprehensive and accessible, it fully illustrates the mental illnesses that many people suffer from, seemingly alone. Well, if you decide to buy this book, you will know right out that you are NOT alone. Dr. Bourne provides insight to the diseases themselves as well as several treatments from the conventional, like drugs, exercise and a healthy diet (a depression-anxiety specific diet), to the alternative medicines, such as yoga and deep relaxation techniques. To the person who wants to change his or her lifestyle from anxious to calm, this book is definitely for you.

    Excellent resource for coping with anxiety, panic, or phobias!

    This book has helped me tremendously. Bourne describes the causes and symptoms of panic and anxiety very accurately. I often found myself shocked at how precisely my feelings and symptoms matched his description. In addition, the exercises he recommends, such as meditation, countering negative self-talk, or practicing decensitization, are enormously helpful for coping with anxiety. If you make a commitment to yourself to overcome your anxiety/panic/phobia, and you're willing to read this book and practice the exercises regularly, you have a terrific chance of full recovery. Just keep in mind that it is a 'workbook', and it does require you to make an effort to change your lifestyle and/or or way of thinking - it probably won't help if you just read it, without attempting to make any changes.

    Helpful Tool for Everyone

    This workbook is packed full of helpful information for those suffering from anxiety disorders or crippling phobias. The workbook can be used with the assistance of a therapist/counselor, or the exercises can be done on their own if finding counseling is difficult.

    It's also helpful for friends and family members of those with anxiety and phobia disorders. The workbook is filled with comprehensive, clear explanations of how anxieties and phobias develop, and how to respond to a friend or family member who is overwhelmed by an anxiety disorder or a phobia.

    While including clinical information, Bourne also emphasizes the connection of body and mind and shows how the body can affect the mind, and vice-versa. The clinical explanations teaches how to use specific physical techniques to regain control of the body by focusing on the autonomic nervous system. Our autonomic nervous system controls our respiration, heartbeat, and our "fight or flight" instincts. Bourne shows us how our "fight or flight" instincts can overwhelm the mind and body which creates anxiety and phobic disorders. He then shows us how to regain control of our mind-body connection through the use of deep breathing, meditation, journaling, exercise, biofeedback, therapy, and some medications.

    I have had Generalized Anxiety Disorder since a Traumatic Brain Injury when I was fifteen (I am now 34). Bourne's book has been a tremendous help over the past two years as my therapist and I have used parts of it to help me over rough and scary times in my life, such as when my mother was diagnosed with cancer or when I needed to learn how to set boundaries between myself and other people. I also go through the workbook on my own and choose information to read and exercises to do depending on what's happening in my life. This book is an excellent tool for anyone who suffers from anxiety, panic, or phobic disorders, as well as their friends and family members.

    Almost anxiety free

    This book is the best book I've even bought. It helped me understand that anxiety is not a disease and I can control my thoughts and emotions. It almost read my mind on each page! I HIGHLY suggest everyone who has anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive worrying and phobias to read this book. Not only does it teach you about what's going on in your head and body, but it includes worksheets to help understand yourself and mold your thoughts into positive self talk. Thank you so much for this book!

    This Book Is So Helpful!

    I can't begin to tell you all of my fears that I worked through using this book. It is a must have in facing your fears. I'd also like to suggest "When God Stopped Keeping Score," an intimate look at the power of forgiveness and yet, it's about so much more. I loved every minute of it. Given the chance, it could change your life.

    wonderful book

    I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I found this book to be extremely helpful, explaning everything from symptoms to step by step getting over it. It lets you take your time and not 'flood' yourself. I would recommend this to anyone who suffers from anxiety, panic, agoraphobia, or anything else related

    Very helpful and informative!

    This is one of the most comprehensive and helpful books that I have ever seen regarding anxiety and social phobias. It is very reassuring and lets the reader feel that they are not alone, and not a "freak." I DEFINITELY recommend it!

    The road to recovery...

    I can honestly say that this book was ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL for my recovery from anxiety/panic attacks. It revealed truths aout myself that blew me away. It was good to see that I wasn't alone, and that my dysfunction had a name. Read this book and heal! Pick up and reclaim your life!

    A first rate book

    This is a superb book, and Dr. Bourne shows extreme insight, preception, and understanding in helping the anxious individual in today's stressful world. He seems to know me better than I know myself! I highly recommend it to anyone who has suffered with anxiety, panic, phobias, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and shyness. It will help you to get on with your life! His book will not be surpassed!
