Any Given Sunday, Vol. 2 [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ayelet Prizant
Releasing a second volume of music from a film as forgettable as Any Given Sunday might seem like a dubious notion, but it turns out not to be such a bad idea. Oliver Stone's peek into the world of pro football first spawned an obscenity-filled, mostly rap soundtrack, but this follow-up installment is much more diverse, beginning with two beautiful instrumentals from former Band member Robbie Robertson "Amazing Grace" and "Out of the Blue". Robertson's contribution continues with the mellow, bass-driven rocker "Carry Me" and an updated remix of his haunting 1994 tune "Ghost Dance." Also featured are Moby's exquisite techno-pop track "Graciosa" and Nina Simone's ...

Robertson's contribution continues with the mellow, bass-driven rocker "Carry Me" and an updated remix of his haunting 1994 tune "Ghost Dance." Also featured are Moby's exquisite techno-pop track "Graciosa" and Nina Simone's smooth-as-silk 1966 hit "Don't Explain," plus tracks from the legendary Smokey Robinson "Cruisin'" and Ella Fitzgerald "Cheek to Cheek". The album's eclecticism doesn't stop there: The field is wide enough to include the upbeat Latin pop of Ozomatli "Como Ves", Roger's classic 1981 disco-funk tune "So Ruff, So Tuff," and film co-star Jamie Foxx's entertaining rap "My Name Is Willie" and respectable stab at R&B "Any Given Sunday Outro". Plus, the album includes Al Pacino's "Inches" speech from the movie -- backed with music by Robertson and Paul Kelly -- to spice up this already flavorful album.
All Music Guide - MacKenzie Wilson
Any Given Sunday, Vol. 2 picks up where the original soundtrack left off by staying with the raucously explicit vibes that made this Al Pacino flick so rowdy. Once again actor Jamie Foxx closes the album out with the theme song, but cuts from Moby, Zapp & Roger, and Ozomatli are also featured. However, the mood turns to the illustrious and dark folk-rock of Canadian singer/songwriter and ex-Band guitarist Robbie Robertson. Robertson leads with five tracks, including "Bended Knee," "Ghost Dance," "Amazing Grace," and "Out of the Blue." Any Given Sunday, Vol. 2 is heavy but not loaded with the bombastic rap Missy Elliott, DMX, Mystikal and boisterous angst rock Kid Rock, Godsmack, P.O.D. like its predecessor. It's a little less crass.
