Overview

Seeing as Oliver Stone's new film, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, which concerns itself with pro football, looks to be a characteristic testoster-Stone fest, it's a nice touch to open the soundtrack with Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott's "Who You Gonna Call." True, Elliott's one muy macha rapper -- and alternative provocateur Courtney Love, who turns up with her band Hole on "Be a Man," has considerable cojones of her own. But given the guy-centric nature of this movie -- not to mention its soundtrack and director -- it's still relatively surprising. The album also features two of the film's stars: rapper-turned-actor-turned-actor-who-still-raps LL Cool J and actor-who-raps Jamie Foxx. Foxx performs with Gang Starr's Guru and Chicago rapper Common on the title track, and Foxx does a solo "Any Given Sunday" outro at the album's end. LL checks in with the album's first single, "Shut 'Em Down." The rock-'n'-rap tip is represented by, among others, Kid Rock (whose "F**k That" slams you around real good), Godsmack (whose "Why" is a hypnotic riff fest), and Christian rap-metal outfit P.O.D.'s blistering "Whatever It Takes." Hip-hop luminaries include Goodie Mob featuring OutKast on "Sole Sunday," Mobb Deep with "Never Going Back," DMX -- whose "My Ni**as" is the only previously released cut of the album's 16 tracks -- and reunited New York duo Capone-N-Noreaga, with their gritty anthem "Reunion." True to its football setting, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY kicks.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Any Given Sunday, Oliver Stone's epic look at the world of professional football, features a soundtrack with aggressive rap and rock tunes from artists like Goodie Mob, Outkast, Godsmack, DMX, and Sevendust. Two of the film's stars, Jamie Foxx and LL Cool J, contribute tracks: Foxx teams up with Guru and Common on the movie's title track, while LL Cool J performs "Shut Em Down." Hole's "Be a Man," Missy Elliot's "Who You Gonna Call," Kid Rock's "F**k That," Mystikal's "Jump," and Mobb Deep's "Never Goin' Back" are among the highlights of Any Given Sunday, a macho collection that may not reflect the film accurately but will please fans of pumped-up rock and hip-hop.
