I read her novels often but I do not like short stores of any kind. I will check closer in the future. Full length or not at all

    Short Story

A "keeps you guessing" short story. As good as any of the longer stories by Stabenow.

    Torn~Chapter 6

I feel them coming towards me. Ok. Whew. They're just like wolves, I tell myself. My eyes are closed and I try to calm down. I know I need to act soon, so I open my eyes. What the hell? No one is there. Instead, I see myself in my bed, with the basketball trophy in front of me. But my room is different. Where's my dog? Instead, I see a body on my bed. I tap their shoulder, and I gasp. The body had turned around and said, "Honey, why did you wake me up? It's only 6 AM in the morning." The face was a little different, but the prettiness had not changed. It was Jessica.

"Jessica, I thaught I killed you." Jessica squinted for a bit, as if trying to remember something. She said, "Oh. Oh. Oh, no. You remembered?" I nodded. "Oh. Oh. Oh, yes. Good." I realized something. This was the future. Jessica was my wife. She was still grinning, and saying, "Oh yes." Then she said something that creeped me out. "I've been hungry for so long. You do know that your life ends when you remember, right?" Ok this was creeping me out more than ever now. She screamed and leaped at me, but at the last moment, she dissapeared. I was back at the tent. THAT'S WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN. I'M WARNING YOU IN ADVANCE! ALWAYS BE PREPARED! DON'T TRUST ANYONE!!! I felt a rage boil inside me. I brought out a knife. I will be prepared. With a cry, I leaped at the nearest evil spirit. I stuck a knife in it, and somehow I knew all the weak points. As I went slashing on and on, my arms became more tired. I screamed,"You deserve this!" I faced the last 5. Weirdly, they were huddled against a corner. One was crying. Crying? Oh, man. They were my friends. Thank god. Quinn, Jessica, John, Adam, and Jenny. But I heard the voice say, REMEMBER, DON'T TRUST ANYONE! NOT EVEN YOUR FRIENDS! That reminded me of the future memory. I turned my back on them, knowing that they weren't my actual friends. "JJJJJAAAAAYYYYY!" They all spoke in unision. What. The. Actual. Hell. They grinned and said, "Eeeeennnnnjjjjjoooooyyyyy yyyyyooooouuuuurrrrr vvvvvaaaaacccccaaaaatttttiiiiiooooonnnnn?!" My response was a stab on Quinn's head. He just smiled, took the knife out and ATE it. They grabbed me, and I could only stare int space, my body in complete shock.

Save the 99 Cents unless you're stuck at a traffic light -- a ten minutes read that's more an outline for a short story than any real narrative.

Dana Stabenow never disappoints - Highly recommend for a Great reading experience

I look forward to each Kate Shugak story - and they are good stories as well as a mystery - and Dana Stabenow takes one through Alaska, her people, and their thinking for another good story and mystery. Any Taint of Vice does not disappont. Now I have to wait for another in the series

Another nice short from one of my favorite authors. Well worth the read especially if you need a Kate and Mutt fix to get you to the next book.
