Overview

Aperture has been redesigned to reflect the dynamic state of contemporary photography, while maintaining the elegance and integrity for which the periodical is renowned. As always, each issue integrates diverse and powerful images with compelling feature articles. The August issue includes a profile of Jean-François Leroy, founder and director of Visa pour L'image, a unique annual festival of exhibitions committed to photography with a social conscience, which takes place in Perpignan, France. A passionate maverick, Leroy discusses both the history and the urgency of this festival, and a selection of the remarkable images that only he has had the nerve to exhibit accompanies the profile. "Theme and Variations" focuses on the complex idea of freedom as it relates to crime and punishment, politics and civil rights. Noted writer-critic-photographer Max Kozloff explores portraiture in photography, using the exhibition "Ghost in the Shell" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as a springboard for his discussion. These new sections, along with writer-curator Edward Leffingwell's account of going "On Location" with the artist Michael Tracey, are just a few of the articles that will enliven the summer issue.
