Overview

The interest of researchers, clinicians, practitioners and surgeons in critical care medicine is growing. Clinical pharmacology and new technologies now allow more appropriate therapies, and the commitment of all those involved in this field is of fundamental importance for reaching high interventional standards, in both the prevention and treatment of critical conditions, but also for satisfying the concept of cost-effectiveness in critical care. In this volume advances in critical care medicine are described, including the application of new technologies in the clinical setting, the full integration of computers and informatics, and the continual training of physicians and technicians.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David J. Dries, MD (University of Minnesota Medical School)
Description: This is a syllabus generated in a multidisciplinary critical care review course held in November 2000 in Trieste, Italy.
Purpose: Provided are updates for the intensivist seeking a postgraduate review course.
Audience: Anesthesiologists participating in critical care training programs are an ideal audience for this work. Editors and authors represent a large European community with interrelated interests in anesthesiology and critical care medicine.
Features: A variety of critical care subjects are covered in the 90 chapters, generally from the perspective of the anesthesiologist. Among general subject areas are cardiovascular and pulmonary critical care, metabolism and renal function, perioperative medicine that is largely focused on risk reduction and anesthetic agents, pediatrics, obstetrics, and brief comments on infection, trauma, and education. Chapters are written with an inconsistent style and illustrations are infrequently used. Citations are provided in adequate numbers and represent seminal work of recent vintage. The table of contents lists chapters by general type of subject matter and authorship. The simple subject index, which concludes the book, seems inadequate for the volume of material.
Assessment: This book has the strengths and weaknesses of a collection of presentations obtained in such a forum. Traditional editorial scrutiny used in textbooks is generally absent. Although some chapters represent thoughtful reviews and useful tools for students, other chapters repeat and confuse the presentations on various topics.
