Overview

In April 1970, during the glory days of the Apollo space program, NASA sent Navy Captain Jim Lovell and two other astronauts on America's fifth mission to the moon. Only fifty-five hours into the flight of Apollo 13, disaster struck: a mysterious explosion rocked the ship, and soon its oxygen and power began draining away. Written with all the color and drama of the best fiction, APOLLO 13 (previously published as Lost Moon) tells the full story of the moon shot that almost ended in catastrophe. Minutes after the explosion, the three astronauts are forced to abandon the main ship for the lunar module, a tiny craft designed to keep two men alive for just two days. As the hours tick away, the narrative shifts from the crippled spacecraft to Mission Control, from engineers searching desperately for a way to fix the ship to Lovell's wife and children praying for his safe return. The entire nation watches as one crisis after another is met and overcome. By the time the ship splashes down in the Pacific, we understand why the heroic effort to rescue Lovell and his crew is considered by many to be NASA's finest hour.
Now, thirty years after the launch of the mission, Jim Lovell and coauthor Jeffrey Kluger add a new preface and never-before-seen photographs to Apollo 13. In their preface, they offer an incisive look at America's waxing and waning love affair with space exploration during the past three decades, culminating only recently when the Apollo 13 spacecraft itself, long consigned to an aviation museum outside Paris, was at last returned to its rightful home in the United States. As inspiring today as it was thirty years ago, the story of Apollo 13 is a timeless tribute to the enduring American spirit and sparkling individual heroism.

    Wow!

Apollo 13 is a great book. If you have seen the movie, you will love the book. It has a lot more detail than the movie and gives more information about Lovell's life before Apollo 13. I will read it again for sure! This is a great book for anyone who loves space, NASA, or suspense.

    This book has it all!

I loved the movie Apollo 13, but after a visit to the Kennedy Space Center last summer, I decided to read this book. Right from the start, the book pulled me in. From discussions about poison pills to the physics behind bringing a ship around the moon and home was amazing. As a public relations professional, I was equally drawn to how NASA worked with the media and the transparency they provide in their agency, even during this "Successful Failure." As I read the book, I developed a deeper understanding of the many people who participated in bringing the crew home, and the three astronauts who's lives were in peril. This would be an excellent book club book as there are so many points for lengthy discussions brought out through its pages. I would recommend this book to anyone in a heartbeat!

I highly reccomend that you read the book Apollo 13. It is a little confusing in some points, but it is very exciting. I have also seen the movie, and I reccomend that too.

    The Sucessful Failure

I loved the movie Apollo 13. It was a great movie.I never read the book of it, but I am sure it's just as good. Apollo 13 was such a interesting movie. The whole story of Apollo 13 is so great thats way I give it 5 stars. And the thing about it is that it really happened. None of it was made up.Imagine how the astronots felt on that mission. They were so happy to final get to walk on the moon. To other people at that time walking on the moon was not exiceting anymore,Cause we had already walked on the moon.Four other astronots already walked on the moon and to most people going back was not that great. But to the astronots on the mission Apollo 13 it was a dream come true. But they never got to walk on the moon cause of the expolosion that happened. The astronots on that mission were not sure if they could make back home alive. But they did.And still today not many people care about the moon or space or science. Instead they are to busy worrieing about the latest trends or actors and singers, or whats on TV. People these days don't know, and will never know, how hard it is to be an astronot, and fly in space. And how hard it was for the astronots on Apollo 13 to do evertihg they did. And those things like learning about space and science are alot more important then knowing what movies are playing and what new songs are out.I think more people should be into space and science. And for people that already are, I think that the movie and book of Apollo 13 are great to watch or read.

    Apollo 13

The film Apollo 13 i found was not a very exciting film and did not really interest me at all! The film was about showing the vewiers that going to space i possible. If i had to recommend this film to people who would be interested would be people that are older or people into science.

Is Apollo 13 all it's blasted off to be?

Is Apollo 13 all it¡¯s blasted off to be? The book Apollo 13 by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger would be rated a 3 out of a 5. The reasons why it is only rated a 3 is because it can be very confusing. The topics that the authors went into are very long and drawn out, also boring. But the book is very exciting and is very real. It makes a great book for anyone who is interested in space and NASA.
