Apollo 18

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Although it lacks a standout single like "Birdhouse in Your Soul," Apollo 18 is a more consistent album than Flood, overflowing with ideas and pop hooks. The most noteworthy idea may have been "Fingertips," a "suite" of 21 song fragments designed to make each random play a new experience, but the meat of the album lies in pop songs like "I Palindrome I," "My Evil Twin," "She's Actual Size," and "Which Describes How You're Feeling." The album has a slightly darker feeling than its predecessors, but that just gives the album a resonance that was missing on Flood.

    Hidden Treasure!

I got hooked on TMBG with "Flood" and didn't pick up this album until more recently, but it's just as wonderful as I would expect. The Johns deliver consistently clever lyrics on "My Evil Twin" with the line "He always wants to start when I want to begin", and on "Mammal" the phrase "Their names are called, they raise a paw." "Mammal" is actually reminiscent to me of "Istanbul" in its fun/educational vein. Stop reading this and buy it already! You won't regret it.

By far, my favorite TMBG album

This was my first TMBG album, and remains my favorite. I found the music to be so ironic and refreshing compared to other CDs out today. TMBG didn't just write about falling in love, then breaking up, and then being sad, as most people do. They wrote about palindromes, mammals, and statues. Though I love all my TMBG albums (of which I have a few), Apollo 18 shows them all up.

    Part of the epic

An absolutley trippy album, by the kings of trip, John Linnell and John Flansburgh. The first CD I ever bought, this album must be ranked above most others released in the 90's, simply due to its innovations and musicality.
