Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Christine Cassello
This 108-page book describes the Appaloosa breed in short, simple to read sentences of about ten words per page. There are full page photographs on the left page of each page of text. It explains that the spotted coat, which has different patterns, make it distinct from other breeds. Two patterns of spots are mentioned. The Leopard Appaloosa has spots all over its body and the Blanket Appaloosa is spotted only on its hips. Other features of this horse that make it different from other horses are also mentioned. The Appaloosa's coat changes color as it matures to a height of 14.2 to 15.2 hands tall. A hand measure is 4 inches. The book explains that this particular horse is popular with ranchers because they are fast and sturdy and they make good trail horses because they are even-tempered. At the back of the book is glossary of unfamiliar words. There is also a page with suggested additional reading and Internet sites where more information about the horses is available. On the back cover is a list of other books in a set of books about horses, each one on a different breed. Reviewer: Christine Cassello
