A smart, funny food mystery - set in Key West

I read and LOVED this book! It so captures the nutty sweetness (food metaphor, of course) of Key West where a street performer actually herds cats. Best of all, Hayley Snow is so funny, and the mystery is compelling. I am so rooting for Hayley -- can't wait for book 2 in the series. For readers who love Cordelia Gray and Goldy Schulz.

Sometimes the cards just don't seem to be in your favor.  Hayley

Sometimes the cards just don't seem to be in your favor.  Hayley Snow moved from her New Jersey home to live in Key West, Florida with her new boyfriend.  This was a great fit for Hayley who loves all things food and is applying to be a food critic in the new local magazine. Then misfortune hits like a poisoned pie in the face, when she returns home one day to find almost all her possessions in the hallway and the editor of the magazine, Kristen,  in bed with Hayley's new boyfriend. You might think Hayley would be glad when she next found Kristen's dead body, but the police think so too, and believe she had a hand in cooking up Kristen's death.  With the cards stacked against her, she must prove her innocence before someone kills her too.

I really enjoyed all the characters in this book, including Hayley's feline friends, her friends at the marina, her psychologist best friend, mysterious Lorenzo,  and an interesting group of homeless men. The mystery kept me guessing until the surprise ending that was so cleverly played out that I completely missed the culprit until the end, which is unusual for me.  Perhaps some of the best parts of this book though were the quotes about food from famous people that headed every chapter, and the cleaver restaurant critiques that Hayley writes about all the restaurants in the book.

There is a real flavor of Key West in this book that draws you right into a feeling of the place.  The food descriptions had me clamoring for something tasty to eat.  The recipes that were included were easy enough for any happy cook to enjoy fixing.  Definite winner for starting a new series.  Thankfully, there are already three more for me to delve into immediately!

A great location, great food, and Haley is adorable

I just happened on this book and am so glad I did.  Haley is such a refreshing, appealing character.  Sure, she has her "little" failings, like moving to Key West for a relationship that isn't too real and doesn't last too long, but she remains likable throughout and her heart is always in the right place.  The mystery keeps you guessing, and the supporting characters are intriguing and make you want to learn more about them.

What a terrific start for a new series!

¿I love cozies with spunky characters. This one has it in spades

“I love cozies with spunky characters. This one has it in spades. I feel for Hayley Snow once I found out she followed her dream man all the way to Key West only to fiind out he was more a nightmare. Then she had to make her way in the ritzy and gorgeous Florida locale when she discovered that she didn't want to leave.
So, she's living on her friend's houseboat and helping her with her cleaning business. But what Hayley really wants to do is write restaurant reviews. She visits and writes about the small local places, not the ritzy-ritz places, but the joints where the locals go. I got so hungry reading this book!!
Then there's the murder of the girlfriend of the ex-pewp cranium 'dream guy' Hayley followed down and lived with. Until she discovered pewp-cranium 'dream guy' in bed with now murdered restaurant owner and potentially Hayley's boss if Hayley gets the food critic job at the local paper.
Now Hayley is a prime suspect and she needs to clear her name.
Well done and I soooo cannot wait to read the next in the series. Thank goodness DEATH IN FOUR COURSES is on the nightstand.....”

Great book, can't wait for next installment.

Lots of us can relate to the mishaps our heroine encounters but she does triumph with a bit of humor.

Hayley Snow loves food. Her dream is to be a successful food critic. She follows her boyfriend, Chad, from her hometown New Jersey to Key West, Florida. The move isn’t exactly a lucky one for Hayley. It’s not long before Chad dumps her and she’s left to build a new life for herself in Key West.

First thing to do is find a place to live, which she does. She moves in with her friend, Connie, on her houseboat. Then, a food critic position becomes available at the local newspaper, Key Zest. Hayley is quick to apply for the job, but is stunned to find that her potential boss is the same woman she found in bed with her boyfriend – Kristen Faulkner! Although an awkward situation, to say the least, Hayley is determined to get the job at all costs.

With things already looking bleak, it just keeps getting worse. Kristen is found murdered and the number one, and apparently only, suspect is Hayley. The police are doing absolutely nothing about finding any other suspects, so Hayley takes matters into her own hands. She fully intends to find the real killer and clear her name. When her search leads to her life being in danger and her cat missing, she knows she’s on the right track. However, will she live long enough to find out?

This is the first book in a new series of cozy mysteries, “Key West Food Critic Mystery” by Lucy Burdette, who also writes two other cozy mysteries under the name Roberta Isleib. It’s, also, the first book I’ve ever read by her (although her other series are in my TBR).

This series takes place in Key West. A place I had the pleasure of visiting a few years ago and absolutely loved. The setting itself would have attracted me to this book.

Each character is written to perfection. Hayley and her friends are extremely likeable and a group you will definitely want to read more about. The plot flowed through each page and captured the reader’s interest from the very first line to the very last line. There were several twists and turns along the way. The book even includes several recipes that look really delicious.

Appetite for Murder has everything I look for in a good cozy – small town, fun characters (a few bad guys, too, of course!) and an interesting storyline that kept you guessing. I was very sad to see this book end. It left me wanting more (not to mention very hungry!) The second book of this series comes out in September and I, for one, will be anxiously awaiting its release.

    WONDERFUL READ! Buy it NOW!

I really enjoyed reading this novel. I have vacationed in Key West many times and the author made me feel like I was there. The main character is younger, which I thought was refreshing. Looking forward to her next novel out in September.

Loves Food, Loves Cats, Bad Taste for Men

I have to admit that mysteries are not always my first choice of reading, but I couldn't resist picking this book up when I saw that the story takes place in Key West -- a favorite location for me -- and serves up all the great mix of foods and restaurants that would take anyone many meals to experience. But it was Hayley Snow's voice that kept me reading. And her plight. Poor kid, she's kind of ditzy and certainly follows her all-too-vulnerable heart (instead of her stomach which is what her mother would have advised her to do) when making life choices -- such as following Chad Lutz, a guy she barely knew, to the island paradise known as Key West. Thank goodness her best friend Eric was already there to pick up the pieces when things went awry. And, oh boy, did they! Quickly, Hayley is the police's POI for the murder of Kristen Faulkner -- the floozy who was in bed with Chad when Kristen came home unexpectedly. Of course, it had to be the Key Lime Pie as a murder weapon. It is Key West.

You'll know all along that it couldn't be Hayley. She's too sweet and naive to plot such a murder. But who? And how many restaurants do we get to visit before finding out?

This is a terrific read, so entertaining and delicious. You'll want to visit Key West soon and hope to meet Hayley as she scoots around town reviewing restaurants for Key Zest, the local newspaper.

Loved all the chapter intros about food. My favorites: " A hot dog or a truffle. God is good." James Beard "I suppose there are people who can pass up free guacamole, but they are either allergic to avocado or too joyless to live." Frank Bruni

Lucy Burdette has dished out a hot dog/truffle/guacamole delight.

    I Also Recommend:

    Murder and Mayhem in Paradise

Haley Snow leaves New Jersey to follow the man of her dreams to Key West, Florida. Things don’t go as planned when Haley learns she’s not the only woman in his life. She is determined to stay in Key West and since her entire life has revolved around food, cooking it, eating it, and writing about it, she decides to apply to be the food critic for a brand new magazine. Sounds good until Haley learns her new boss would be the other woman in her ex-boyfriend’s life. Things get crazy when the police show up at her door to question her about a murder. The other woman is dead and Haley’s career as a food critic could be over before it has even begun.

    Dollycas’s Thoughts
Key West – Paradise – The perfect setting!! for mystery and mayhem!!!

Lucy Burdette weaves us through the streets of this small island, a popular tourist spot, and a place loved by both Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. Key West’s culinary influences and offerings are as diverse as its population. Haley has a variety of eateries to critique. I have absolutely fallen for this character. I want to be this character. Even with the suspicion of being a murderer. She lives in a beautiful place, has wonderful friends and even lives on a boat. Her days are filled with eating yummy food, visits with chefs, a cat herder, a tarot card reader and did I mention she lives on a boat!

The mystery is divine, it is perfectly paced and the ending is a surprise. I have an appetite for much more from Lucy Burnette and the awesome life of Haley Snow. This is very delicious debut of what will definitely be a delectable series.
