Overview

American songs and art celebrate the American work ethic. Now you can whistle or sing while you work!

This richly illustrated songbook celebrates typically American occupations, past and present. The haircutter counsels, "Barber, Spare Those Hairs"; the telephone operator pines from "Long Distance Blues"; and the musician joins "The Orchestra." New York Times-best-selling author Jane Yolen has collected and introduces the work songs in this sing-along book, including familiar classics as well as musical tales of the modern American work world ("My Father Is a Programmer" or the astronaut's "Fire in the Sky"), beautifully illustrated with kid-friendly American folk art such as whirligigs and mechanical banks. For the kids who already know what they want to be when they grow up and for those still unsure, these songs set for piano and guitar give them anthems to match their ambitions.

Author Bio: Jane Yolen is a New York Times-best-selling author whose more than 200 books for young people include a Caldecott Medal winner, two Nebula Award winners, two Christopher Medal winners, and a National Book Award nominee, among other honored books. Adam Stemple is a musician, composer, and science-fiction. This is his eighth musical collaboration with Jane Yolen, who also happens to be his mom. Eileen Michaelis Smiles received her Master's Degree in the History of Decorative Arts from the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. Her eponymous antiques shop in Woodbury, Connecticut, has been featured in the New York Times and Architectural Digest.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Apple for the Teacher: Thirty Songs for Singing While You Work, edited by Jane Yolen, music arr. by Adam Stemple, introduces young people to the early tradition of people who sang not only while they worked but about their work. A "Bargee" song describes traveling the Erie Canal (Yolen briefly describes when the canal was completed and how it was used); "Git Along, Little Dogies" describes a cowboy's experience. Reproductions of related arts and crafts appear alongside every song, including some modern songs and modern verses that bring the past closer; music is included. School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-Thirty occupations, ranging from astronaut to weaver, are celebrated in song. The tunes are simple and usually short. Several were written and composed by the authors, such as "My Father Is a Programmer," "Bodies on the Line," and "Stand and Wait." Traditional examples are both familiar, like "Stewball" and "Casey Jones," and relatively unknown. Many are undated. Some jobs are not gender-specific, but most, perforce, are traditionally men's work. The illustrations provide a vivid picture-book bonus, and captions often give more documentation for the artifacts than for the music. Folk weather vanes, wooden sculptures, paintings, and textiles (tablecovers, quilts, rugs) in bright, sharp reproduction lend charm and naive directness to the accompanying songs. These touching illustrations perfectly animate the world of the laborers reflected in the songs. History, art, and music work in sweet harmony here.-Patricia D. Lothrop, St. George's School, Newport, RI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
