Most mothers will tell you their children are a gift from God and most mothers, like me, will tell you they wish they could return them.

You have to read again.
Author presented to us his world via the point of view of a homophobic mother who couldn't stand the bitter truth that her only child and son was gay.
She lived in a society where homosexuals are not tolerated, where everyone is expected to be straight; and she tried to make her son straight to no avail.
The poor boy pleaded with his homophobic mother to accept him the way he is, and his mum thought otherwise and killed him.
After my first reading, I wanted to hurry here and lambast this author but a rethink. I read again and saw that the author only placed before us the plight of the homosexuals in the hands of those who have refused to understand that one cannot choose one's sexuality just as one can't choose one's color or DNA.
Author should have employed third person POV.
A great story.
