    Aperture 2 step by step

The book is the official Apple Pro training course for Aperture, Apple's all-in-one post-production tool for photographers. It's a book-DVD training combination which starts with the basics of image management and takes you step by step all the way through Aperture 2's powerful photo-editing, image-retouching, proofing, publishing, and archiving features. Ben Long is a writer and photographer who has written extensively about digital photography for Macs. Richard Harrington is an author and Apple Certified trainer. Filmmaker, photographer and educator Orlando Luna is now a senior system engineer at Apple. The book is designed to teach you how to use Aperture in the context of a professional workflow, using 12 project-based, step-by-step lessons and accompanying media files. It's almost 100% hands on. Running through all the lessons will take you about 17 hours. It's divided into three main sections: importing and organising, image editing, and printing and publishing. The first topics are exploring the Aperture workflow, evaluating images: compare and select, and organising your project. The image editing section is sub-divided into basic edits, working with RAW images, correcting tone, correcting colour, and repairing and enhancing your images. Finally, section three covers delivering images for client review, delivering final images, showcasing and promoting you work, and Aperture automation. I have worked through the first three lessons myself. The DVD material is easy to use. Lessons are structured very clearly in manageable steps with brief, clear explanations about the context of what you are doing. I liked the lesson review questions and answers at the end of each lesson. At the beginning of each lesson there's a list of lesson files, time and goals spelling out how long it will take to complete the lesson, followed by a list of what is to be achieved. This is a comprehensive, practical and well organised training course written by those who know what they are talking about. If you take the trouble to complete all 12 lessons, you'll find yourself amply rewarded: perhaps even an Aperture whiz. Greg Davies The Apple Users' Society of Melbourne 'AUSOM'

Start Here to Develop Good Aperture 2 Workflow

Aperture has much to offer photographers. Sharing some features of Adobe's Bridge and Photoshop programs, Aperture offers many powerful features for editing and managing photos. The Apple Pro Training Series' Aperture 2 book provides comprehensive training to get the most out of the program. While you may be tempted to skip over the introduction and jump into the lessons, there is actually some very useful information to be found in the very front of the book. Information about your work environment and settings on your Mac itself is given, which could prove quite useful to those without Color Management training. Divided into three sectionsâ⿬⿠Importing & Organizing, Image Editing, and Printing & Publishingâ⿬⿠Aperture 2 covers major topics needed to understand and use the power of Aperture. Each chapter begins with a useful reference page, listing which files will be used (unsurprisingly Lesson 1 uses the 'Lesson01' files, etc.), the learning goals of the lesson, and the estimated time to complete the lesson, which allows the user to set aside an appropriate amount of time to complete the lesson. Information is presented in a useful way, with the lessons subtly introducing multiple methods of completing each task at once. This is very useful, as the reader can immediately pick up on the methods which are best suited to their working style rather than learning the different ways in a hodgepodge manner. Numerous useful suggestions to speed workflow and to develop good working habits are included throughout the book. Handy tips are presented to highlight useful or important data that can prevent frustration or save time. Notes provide further explanation about topics when needed. Keyboard shortcuts are presented in each lesson in a context that can help the user quickly learn to apply them. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a good working knowledge of Aperture. The Aperture 2 book is very helpful, though absolute beginners should probably start with Apple's introductory videos before starting with the book. Experienced users will likely find ample useful information and tips to satisfy. This book would be especially useful to those who have not yet gotten set in their ways, as the information would help the user to develop good habits. It would be an excellent companion to the software itself, so keep this in mind if you will be purchasing Aperture.

    Great Organization

This how to manual is designed to read like you might take a course. I explored other options and this manual was the most organized, clearly written and concise manual out there.

Great Intro to Get You Going on Aperture

Guided waltz thru the main street of Aperture 2 has been helpful to me as a beginner... actually takes you by the hand and shows you what otherwide takes a little motivation to find in the big Aperture manual. But it really doesn't answer questions that you might have about how specific editing functions work nor how they fit into your workflow other than on a very simplistic level. There are many tools to adjust color, brightness and contrast in an image and you are left wondering how to use them in combination and in connection with the histogram and numerical readings of the image. You get to see the controls on the dashboard and sorta what they do but not how they do it nor how to develop the tool techniques to tweak your images for various types of compound image challenges. There's got to be more, but this is a good starter. If you're the type that uses a program but only uses a couple of features BUT would like to realize the benefits of the rest of the goodies, this book will help!
