Overview

World War III is over, and nomad soldier Duenan Knute and her cyborg partner Briareos struggle to survive in the abandoned cities and demilitarized zones of the post-war wasteland, the "Badside." Matters appear on the upswing, however, when they are found and brought to Olympus, an urban utopia and centerpiece for the reconstruction of civilization. Duenan and Bri join the Olympus' police, a force that seems hardly necessary in such a paradise. But, like in most pretty pictures, perfection is an illusion, and Olympus' peaceful facade hides a dark secret, a violent struggle between human and cyborg that could once again plunge the world into war... and genocide.

I had seen the anime but never read the book until now. The book over all is a great read. The art is very clean and easy to follow without so much 'fill in the blank' like other manga can be. The story is well set up in this first book and the characters are very easy to latch onto. I would recommend this to anyone that has seen the anime or if you like post-apocalyptic/future metropolis/mecha style sci-fi. This book has a great balance of art and story.

Most often in comic books, story is sacrificed for artwork and vice-versa. In Masamune Shirow's world of Appleseed, both are blended perfectly. With attention to detail in both writing and character/mecha design, this book brings the complexities of a Clancy novel into the world of comic books. Set in the future after WWIII, Duenan Knute and her cyborg mentor, Briareos, are found living in the badlands and invited to live in a new city-state, Olympus. At first, the city seems to be a near-paradise, but something sinister lurks underneath the pristine exterior. Fans of espionage, intrigue, action and mechanics will definitely enjoy Appleseed: The Promethean Challenge and it's subsequent volumes
