Description: This book provides a foundation for behavioral clinicians to increase their skills in various evidence-based competencies of applied behavior analysis (ABA), including reinforcer evaluation, functional analysis, video modeling, and technology application. It also discusses the supervising of ABA trainees, along with cultural and ethical issues. This second edition is an update to the original version, which was published in 2017.
Purpose: According to the back cover, the purpose of the book is to offer "pragmatic advice, direction, and recommendations [to be] an effective clinician, consultant, supervisor, and performance manager." These are very worthy objectives, and the book meets the stated objectives.
Audience: The book is written for behavior analysts and other behavioral practitioners. Graduate students will benefit from this book as well. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The author is a credible authority on the subject matter. He is a clinical psychologist and director of clinical development and research at Melmark New England, Andover, MA. He is interested in treatment for challenging behaviors, performance, and health psychology. The other contributors are affiliated with institutions of higher education and research centers in the U.S.
Features: The book begins with a description of preference assessments. There are six types of preference assessments that analysts normally choose from to identify reinforcers. Treatment integrity is important to increase intervention efficacy and decrease errors. The number of students interested in ABA is increasing, so supervision is a critical part of the training process. Since the advent of COVID-19, telebehavioral health (TBH) has grown dramatically; clinicians must evaluate various practices so that clients can benefit in the same way they would from in-person services. Clinicians should be aware of the populations they serve so they can be multiculturally competent. They must also be aware of any potential adverse effects that could occur from their work. The book ends with a discussion of future research, specifically in terms of building research teams and providing leadership. The book is very readable and contains figures/tables that help clarify the text.
Assessment: This book is excellent, as it provides a comprehensive presentation of ABA written by experts in the field. It explores practice competencies, service delivery, and professional development. This second edition justifies replacing the first, because the chapters have been revised with new material, especially in terms of telehealth delivery.
