Overview

Rosalinda Alfaro-LeFevre's Sigma Theta Tau Best Pick and AJN Book of the Year award-winning text is now in its Sixth Edition, with a new focus on using the nursing process as a tool for critical thinking. The greatly expanded critical thinking content equips nurses with crucial decision-making skills and reflects current ANA standards.

This edition presents evidence-based Critical Thinking Indicators™—behaviors that promote critical thinking—for each phase of the nursing process, plus tools to help nurses prioritize their approach at each phase. Other new features include expanded coverage of delegation, collaborative practice, and documentation, and key regulations for error prevention. A new design helps readers focus on what's most important.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Carole Ann Kenner, PhD, MSN, BSN(Northeastern University Bouve College of Health Sciences)
Description: This book applies the nursing process while harnessing the best of healthcare informatics. It illustrates how this process fits within the context of new technology information systems. This sixth edition updates the previous edition of 2002.
Purpose: The purpose is to move beyond the task-oriented nursing process of the past and to apply critical thinking and reasoning to it. It is presented within the context of the information age so that its strategies fit within health information systems and electronic medical records and can be individualized to specific patient/family needs. These objectives are worthy and met.
Audience: The intended audience is the practicing nurse that needs updating or the student just learning the nursing process. The author is a well respected nurse educator.
Features: The book begins with an overview of the nursing process. It highlights differences between the process and critical thinking. The next sections cover each step of the nursing process ending with appendixes that reflect NANDA, NIC, and NOC. Unique to this book are the use of critical thinking exercises as well as evidence-based critical thinking indicators that reinforce the nursing process. Key regulators are noted that will help ensure patient safety and free downloadable nursing tools that can be used with individualized patient plans. Key terms are highlighted in the left margins of the chapter. Color boxes representing rules that reinforce important concepts also assist the reader prioritize the material. Cartoons humorously illustrate parts of the nursing process, breaking up somewhat dry reading.
Assessment: There are many books on the nursing process but none present the lively interactive exercises of this book. Nor do they bring the process into the information age. This book is an excellent addition to foundational nursing knowledge.
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Amy McClune, PhD, RN (Edinboro University of Pennsylvania)
Description: This well-organized book provides a comprehensive review of the nursing process for nurses at all levels. From the student viewpoint, the author provides tips for using the nursing process as an approach to analyzing NCLEX questions.
Purpose: In a conversational and practical manner, this seventh edition provides a current view of the nursing process in the expanding scope of practice. The differences between nursing practice, advanced nursing practice, and medical practice are described within the nursing process model.
Audience: The author invites readers from all levels to use this book to understand the importance of the nursing process. She speaks of current nurses who want to update their understanding; nurses who practice in magnet hospitals; faculty members who are looking for current methods to teach; and students who are early in their learning.
Features: The first chapter reviews the nursing process, its uses, and its importance to practice. The next five chapters focus on each of the steps of the nursing process. Illustrations are effective in reinforcing content. Quotes from nurses that emphasize important points, simple rules to help remember content, and "think about it" patient scenarios are highlighted in call-out boxes. The appendixes include commonly used NANDA diagnoses, the role of advanced practice nursing, and an interesting game — "Dead On" — to promote critical thinking.
Assessment: In this quick review of the nursing process, the author weaves the importance of the nursing process into the recommendations from regulatory and professional agencies like the American Nurses Association, the Institute of Medicine, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Joint Commission. This emphasizes the importance of the nursing process in real nursing practice.
