Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Kristin Fletcher-Spear
This overview of the college application process is thorough for any high school student wanting to get a head start. Breaking down the junior and senior years into different workable projects, beginning with analyzing your strengths and weaknesses, researching colleges, working through applications, and ending with making decisions. Within each section, the author adds to the content by providing checklists, call-out boxes with other things to consider, and the "Heads Up!" comments throughout each chapter. These comments are the most important points the author makes in the book. The author's experience as a learning specialist comes across as she writes about the accommodations and other LD issues that arise when considering colleges. While the book tries to focus on the ADD and LD student, the guide is thorough in exploring the college application process and has many valuable options for any student looking for a path to follow during this stressful period of high school. The parts the author includes for the ADD and LD issues are repetitive and do not contain a large amount of content. It would have been better suited to a special section of the book rather than repeated throughout so that the book would have better appeal to a general audience. Reviewer: Kristin Fletcher-Spear

This handy guide will help any student, including those with Attention Deficit Disorder or Learning Disabilities make it through the college application process. Written in both a "how to" and chronological format, the reader is given a foolproof plan for applying to college. From helping the student understand his/her strengths and weaknesses to guiding him/her through asking for accommodations once accepted, this guide is a step-by-step manual. Set up with titles and subtitles, this book is easy to navigate and locate pertinent information. The inclusion of tables, charts, and graphs, make difficult decisions easier (i.e. SAT vs. ACT). Grossberg keeps her writing informative, yet reader friendly, allowing these often struggling readers easy access to the information. Checklists and tracking sheets within the text give the reader a place to record data as he/she reads and completes tasks. Specific information is provided to help those who need it, ask for accommodations and sections that adress taking or getting medication make it perfect for students with disabilities. Additional resources listed in the back of the book encourage the reader and assist him/her with finding more information, if necessary. Reviewer: Maggie L. Schrock

Gr 9 Up—While this book was written for, and specifically addresses, high school students with ADD or LD, it is sure to be useful for teens who are not sure what to expect when applying to college. The text is written at about a ninth-grade level, which is perfect for those students whose strength may not be in reading. It is easy to follow and organized in a logical fashion. There are plenty of charts to help readers stay organized, and most of them come with clear examples so there should be no confusion. This book will be particularly helpful to first-generation college students who may need a little extra information about the whole process.—Wendy Smith-D'Arezzo, Loyola College, Baltimore, MD
