She survived a trial year at the Academy of Magic, but that was the easy part…

Now sixteen-year-old Ryiah is an apprentice of Combat, her school’s most notorious faction. Ry’s new apprenticeship is nothing like what she prepared for. War is on the horizon and her lessons aren’t just for practice anymore.

It’s time to fight.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Praise for Rachel E. Carter's bestselling The Black Mage series:

"It takes a lot for me to truly fall in love with a book. I think I maybe do this once or twice a year. This is one of those times. I found a new fantasy story that sucked me in (completely). Imagine my surprise that it was YA too. Y'all know me. Normally, I go for the NA and above reads. But this series...it just has that something "extra". That extra punch that drags you in and won't let go. I hope you give it a try. It's THAT good." - Scarlett Dawn, NYT & USA Today bestselling author of Forever Evermore

"A magical academy where potential mages train and study all things magic, a love-hate relationship with an arrogant prince, and a determined and unyielding female heroine? Sign me up." - Raisa Santos - TheFandom.Net

"Falling somewhere between the magic of Hogwarts and the excitement of Hunger Games, this story resides in the niche rather nicely!" - Margaret Faria - InD'Tale Magazine

"This has undoubtedly become one of my favorite YA fantasy series. Hands down, no competition." -Melissa, EverSoMela, top Goodreads reviewer

"Rachel E. Carter has a definite fan in me forever, keep doing what you're doing Rachel because you write an amazing story!" -Emmeline, The Book Herald, top Amazon reviewer

This book is all four years in one, which wasn't what I was expecting, but I didn't read the blurb either so go figure. Liked Darren & Ryiah in this one, I'm sure the triangle is going to give everyone hell but screw that, it was totally worth it for the ending. WHEN IS THE THIRD BOOK COMING? I WANT A WEDDING!!!

I really tried to like this book, and hoped that it would improve compared to the previous one, but it was not to be. I still kept reading and finished this one, but not sure if I will be able to go through the third book as well. Story looked interesting, and I hoped that main heroine will pull her act together at some point. This is pretty much a romance book, with a typical distressed and weak heroine, who needs to be rescued – ALL THE TIME. Every other person in the book, her friends or rivals or indifferent ones rescue her at one point or another. And we are talking about the person who is being trained in magic and combat arts! Main problem with the book is the main character, who is, in my opinion, completely unlikable a. We are told that she is very strong magic user, and all around her imply that she is very good, but she lost every single battle / duel she was a part of. b. She is a typical “damsel in distress”, I lost count how many times she needed to be rescued or ended in the hospital for her sheer stupidity, and seems like she was never able to learn anything ( I understand that smart ones learn from the mistakes of others and stupid ones for their own, but Ry could not learn anything from either her or others mistakes) c. She is supposed to be well trained “combat mage”, but author does not give even one proof for that. She seems to do not know how to fight any time she has to do it, and seems to always be surprised by the opponent. d. Did I mention that the main hero, trained “combat mage” and supposed to be one of the best magic users lost all her battles and runs out the magic in like two minutes after the start of the fight? e. And throws jealous tantrum without constrain any time she feels it, even though half of this and previous book are devoted to describing (I think I skipped those pages, they were so boring) how she is trained to have a better control? f. Author tried to have happy ending for this book, but it came so unnaturally The concept of the sword and magic and the training of the gifted students, with their camaraderie and growing together was great, and I liked it for this book. Unfortunately, everybody did some growing and maturing except of the main character.

4.5 stars! More action, more romance, more angst, more... Darren of course ;) Apprentice is so good! And it's better than First Year. One thing I stated on my First Year's review about how lack the description of world building. Well, we get it more in Apprentice. I love that. Our heroine is now a combat apprentice. Ryiah may not the best apprentice among her friends, but I always admire her strong personality. She knew what she wanted and set foots to reach her goal. But, she could be a foolish girl when it comes to Darren. Ry!!! How could you be so stupid?? Asking Darren's feeling in front of Blayne??? Geeezzzz.. Of course he would never admit that he loves you. Why couldn't you wait until you are both alone?? Fortunately, Darren has redeemed himself and I was literally screaming and grinning like an idiot on the last chapter. "You will never, ever be good enough. Not for Darren" "When he betrays you - because he will - I hope you remember that" Aaah Ian. I always have a soft spot for him even though I'm always on Darren side. I hope he will find a better girl who loves him back. I'll be looking forward for Ry and Ian's future match. "I told you not to trust a wolf," he continued. His words dripped like honeyed venom. "Because it would only ever want to break you." Darren let out a small harst laugh. "Haven't you figured it out yet? I'm the wolf, Ryiah." There are several moments I really hate Darren and I wished Ryiah could moved on from him. Not completely, but enough to made him felt insecure, that he had lost her. I understood that he has wait until ceremony but couldn't he told her even slightly. Two years is not a short moment, Darren. You were so cruel to let Ryiah heart broken over two years! I wish Darren will get punishment from Ry on the next book. *cough*Rachel, please make this happen*cough* *evil smile* What could've been better from Apprentice? The cover. Several times I picked a book because the cover. I believe many of us ever did. Somehow I found covers of The Black Mage are lacking something. That was also my reason I doubt whether I must pick First Year or not, although the blurb sounded promising. I hope Candidate will be better :)

OMG THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!! OK so now i can be calm and actually write a legit review. I did come across some errors in the writing and it needed to be edited one more time but other than that the story was a huge hit for me. Ryiah drove me insane. The love triangle was ok, i have read several stories with love triangles so i just roll my eyes at them. But the way Rachel wrote it was actually well done. I love how you got to feel what each character was going through. Darren drove me up the wall but you could not fall in love with him. I was rooting for him the whole time and to see both Ryiah and Darren grow and developed into the mages was really cool. (no i am not putting spoilers in this review). All in all I NEED MORE!!!!! I have already started the 3rd book and i know ill finish it today but i want to wait cause i hate waiting for the final bool. I have so many questions.
