There are more than 800 apprenticeable jobs in the United States that include painters, paper hangers, wall finishers, glaziers, sign and display workers, plumbers, gasfitters, welders, roofers, bricklayers, carpenters, cooks, stage technicians, health care workers, military opportunities, and many more occupations. Written for teenagers who are not interested in going directly to college, this book covers opportunities that are currently active in the United States, and provides an overview of the work involved in each job category, the job outlook, salary, and expected growth in that area through 2012. Each section concludes with an extensive resource list of contact names, addresses, and websites of places to go to find out more information about the job of interest

Editorial Reviews

Reference and Research Book News
Intended for high school students, this vocational reference describes 100 plus apprenticeable jobs in the construction, entertainment, health care, maintenance, personal care, production, and protective services industries, social services, and military. Each entry overviews the work performed, the job outlook and wages in the field, apprenticeship programs, and related skills.
VOYA
Perhaps fueled by recent reality shows featuring professionals vying for a position that would ensure them access to some of the most successful business people of this age or maybe just by a need for alternatives to the traditional college track, a new text investigates the age-old practice of apprenticeship. After a brief discussion of the history of apprenticing, the text quickly shifts to apprenticeship today, explaining the organizational structure, various programs, and the nuts and bolts of applying for and entering into an apprenticeship position. Subsequent chapters discuss the various industries that accept apprentices and the benefits of these types of positions. These include a summary of apprenticeships in construction, arts and entertainment, health care, social services, and the military. Each chapter highlights several positions within a particular category and lists their requirements, job outlooks, wages, and resources for more information. A final chapter serves as a guide for making choices about apprenticeships and finding opportunities for positions. Appendixes list national and state governing agencies as well as officially recognized positions and their commitments. References listed by chapter include a mix of print and online sources for further research. This resource is a perfect overview of a tradition that predates the current system of higher education. With a mix of positions that are designed as an adjunct to some formalized education and those intended as stand-alone training, this book serves as a good introduction to the whys and hows of apprenticeships. School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-An excellent starting point for teens. Each chapter is devoted to a specific field that typically offers apprenticeships, such as construction, entertainment, health care, protective and investigative services, social services, the military, etc. Beginning with an introduction on the history of apprenticeships and a description of the practice today, chapters contain information on the salary, growth, and outlook for each field. A variety of specific jobs are given, along with detailed descriptions of what activities each one might entail. A number of resources for organizations devoted to each area are provided. Appendixes include general resources as well as state-by-state listings of apprenticeship and training offices. Pages are broken up with text boxes, black-and-white photos, tips, and real-life stories. Readers looking for more in-depth information should try Michael Farr and Laurence Shatkin's 250 Best Jobs through Apprenticeships (JIST, 2005).-Michelle Roberts, Merrick Library, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
