Overview

The audio tie-in to the Tristar movie release this October, starring Sit Ian McKellen, David Schwimmer, and Brad Renfro is the story of Todd Bowden, a 16-year-old all-American high school student who is stunned when the Holocaust is addressed and then dismissed in the classroom after only a few short weeks. Todd sets out to research the period and finds Kurt Dussander, a Nazi war criminal living under the assumed name of Arthur Denker. Todd blackmails Arthur into revealing the evil atrocities he once committed, in exchange for his silence. The two begin a dangerous relationship which spirals out of control and produces fatal results. Unabridged.

It doesn't get any better than Frank Muller reading vintage Stephen King! In Apt Pupil, this master of suspense treats his readers to a sinister plot in which a 13-year-old boy, Todd Bowden, becomes completely absorbed by the life and true stories of a former Nazi, Kurt Dussander. When Todd uncovers the identity of a war criminal hiding out in his town, he blackmails Kurt into telling, and reliving, all of the concentration camp horrors so Todd can almost feel what it was like to have been there. The more involved the two become, the deeper and harder it is for Todd to remain the "apt pupil" that he once was. And, of course, the author's (Bag of Bones, Audio Reviews, LJ 12/98) plots always have twists. This audiotape is pure, unadulterated Stephen King; it's "must- have audio" at its best. Highly recommended.--Kristin M. Jacobi, Eastern Connecticut State Univ., Willimantic Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

What an ending. Throughout the course of the book I never once asked myself, “What is the purpose of this book?” I often mentally screamed at the author, “Why are you doing this to me?!”, but never what the purpose was. It was too brisk. I think Steven King had a lot of fun writing this book. I think he had a lot of fun creating an All American kid with good grades and athleticism, and guiding him gently, almost lovingly towards the homicidal breaking point. King takes everything that made Todd Bowden the perfect American teenager in the early summer of his life and twists it. Everything that would make any teen proud and put him on the path to successful adulthood is rendered impotent by a curiosity gone horribly wrong. If you like medium to fast paced psycho-drama with a hint of thriller and mystery thrown in then you will like this book. I give Apt Pupil a four out of five star rating.

As usual, King delivers what we all expect. Love his storylines, macabre thoughts, and overall style. Have been a fan since day one. Love it.

Stephen King has struck gold with these excellent & unforgettable tales. I loved them all from beginning to the end of the stories. This book was a major page turner. Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption/Hope Springs Eternal,Apt Pupil/Summer of Corruption, The Body/Fall From Innocence, and The Breathing Method/ A Winter's Tale. They were all beautiful, touching & bittersweet. Stenphen King obivously written from the soul. The stories have been told in a major sense of life experience. It is well shown especially in The Body/Fall from Innocence.

Apt Pupil is the most frightening story I have ever read, even though 'Different Seasons' is touted as a non-horror book. All four stories are excellent- the Best Stephen King has ever written. Anyone who dismisses him as a hack should read this book.
