Candace Smith
Douglas Brightglade, the apprentice fire adept who earned his journeyman status under Flarman Flowerstalk's watchful eye in "Pyromancer" , sets out on a quest to confront a coven of black witches and become a master magician in this lively sequel. Accompanied by Marbleheart, a sea otter he meets after being shipwrecked, and aided by an assortment of magical spells, Douglas faces the Forest of Forgetfulness, hobgoblins, and barrow-wights before he reaches the ruined city of Pfantas to seek Cribblon, an ex-apprentice air adept who has alerted the fellowship of wizards to the danger of Emaldor, the powerful black witch. Meanwhile, Douglas' betrothed, Myrn Manstar, is serving her own apprenticeship under a famed aquamancer and trying to keep her mind off Douglas and on her studies. When she senses he's in trouble, she sets off to find him. Readers of the first book will recognize returning characters, among them animate kitchen utensils and former heroes. Callander comes dangerously close to being too clever, and his characters tend to get in and out of scrapes a little too conveniently, but the story moves along, and fantasy readers who like elves and talking animals will be enchanted.
