Overview

This edition of the Dictionary, published eighteen years after its first appearance, is an enlarged and improved version of the original corpus. During the past two decades, the Dictionary has achieved widespread acceptance and use. In the interim, modern written Arabic has continued to exhibit vigorous lexical growth. Therefore, feeling the need to fill in many gaps and update the corpus, the author again undertook systematic collection of material. In addition to many neologisms of recent origin, the author has incorporated much older material attested in present-day contexts, which had not yet appeared in the Dictionary, as well as numerous improvements and corrections. The result is that this revised edition has nearly 200 new pages.

If you're studying Arabic as a foreign language, you probably already know what "The" Hans Wehr is. I was about as happy as a little girl when I heard it came out on ebooks, as searching for roots on a reader would be about ten times fast fast as manually skimming through pages of the lengthy tome Hans Wehr is. Turns out my happiness was a little premature. Problem with this version is, you can't search for Arabic terms in it, rendering it effectively useless. Sorry, folks, this isn't what we've been waiting for.

Was suggested this book by my instructor. Feels like I'm looking at calculus and am just learning how to count to 10! Pretty intense, but from my little knowledge of Arabic, I think this is a great book for someone more advanced, though, especially since there are NO english words, and detailed info on verbs, nouns, etc (also no diacritics). You must only know Arabic. This will probably be something I'll eventually purchase.

This is the definitive Arabic-English Dictionary on the market today. It is a must for any serious student of Arabic. It's even better than the previous edition, which I've been using since I began studying Arabic in 1981.
