Pretty good but you must work

This is a pretty good introduction to Modern Standard Arabic. The dialogues (with the CD) are especially helpful. There are many exercises to reinforce material introduced in each unit, some are easy, others more difficult. There are long lists of vocab words given in each unit, pertaining to the dialogue. It's not realistic for the reader to memorize all of these at once. I've been going thu this book for about a month, and I'm about halfway through it. My advice for using this book is first listen to and read the dialogues, then attempt to learn some of the vocab(not all). Then try one excercise per day, don't overload. Set aside time to review previous units, as vocab and grammar introduced back in Unit 5 will appear again in Unit 10, etc. This won't tell you everything you need to know about Arabic, but it's a good start. The vocab and selections seem to focus on material you need to read newspapers, listen to news reports, as opposed to reading novels. But you will also learn a lot about reading, as there are many short reading passages throughout the book. Overall, a good buy, but be prepared to work.
