Arachnid Class

Overview

The arachnids include some of the planet's most feared creatures, such as venomous scorpions and deadly funnel-web spiders. Other arachnids-like the tiny house dust mites that live by the millions in all of our homes-are among the world's smallest and most successful animals. The Arachnid Class explores the origins, scientific classification, and biology of arachnids, from familiar garden spiders to less common creatures such as wind scorpions and the rare, cave-dwelling "living fossil" spiders of Southeast Asia....

The more than 80,000 known species of arachnids play important roles in the world's ecosystems. As The Arachnid Class shows, these creatures also affect human life in a variety of ways.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tiffany Torbeck
Spiders can be terrifying; however, understanding them can lead to fascination. As with the other books in the "Family Trees" series, the book starts with an explanation of taxonomy and how arachnids work into that system. From there, readers will be absorbed in the evolution of arachnids and tales of the largest spider ever (roughly the size of a dog). Initial reaction to much of the information and pictures will be disgust, mixed with intrigue. Readers will marvel at the camouflage ability of the crab spider while wrinkling their nose at a picture of a wolf spider. Also some popular myths are debunked, like camel spiders screaming and daddy-long-legs being the most poisonous spider in the world. This title does an excellent job of describing how arachnids and humans interact with each other, and reminding readers about the threats posed to these creatures. The glossary and index are well formed and will be very helpful in classroom projects. Reviewer: Tiffany Torbeck
