Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
French violinist Catherine Lara joins forces with Deep Forest programming/keyboard whiz Eric Mouquet for an energetic tour through Gypsy soundscapes on Aral. Lara and band waste no time getting into gear: After briefly surveying an exotic sun streaked horizon, "Eastern Lands" pushes the pedal to the metal. Lara's pizzicato plucking leaps sand dunes and her slick bow skates over silvery rails, while Michel Sanchez's punchy accordion charges along like a steam engine. Clapping, chants, and assorted percussion add exotic travel stickers to the sound. The rhythmic grooves bob and sway on "Unity," and Lara's violin takes on an array of electronic permutations, from ...

Lara's pizzicato plucking leaps sand dunes and her slick bow skates over silvery rails, while Michel Sanchez's punchy accordion charges along like a steam engine. Clapping, chants, and assorted percussion add exotic travel stickers to the sound. The rhythmic grooves bob and sway on "Unity," and Lara's violin takes on an array of electronic permutations, from heartrendingly rhapsodic to funkily lyrical. Fans of Deep Forest will notice electronically altered vocals and chants throughout the album -- particularly on "Blue Dawn" -- similar to the use of African pigmy songs on the group's classic album. However, Aral is rich with vocals of all types: "Requiem for a Dying Sea" features deep South African choral singing while an Russian Orthodox-style choir adds ominous overtones on the title track. Lara's playing is extraordinary throughout, but top musicians such as Mouquet, guitarist Sylvain Luc, and Uilleann piper Patrick Molard propel the set into the stratosphere. A gentle, playful duet between Lara's plucked strings and Luc's glistening picking close this refreshing and gutsy album nicely.
All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
International violin star Catherine Lara has been playing around the world for nearly three decades and the experience and worldliness that she brings to her playing shows on this album. Featuring Eric Mouquet of Deep Forest, the album journeys around a world of musical textures, always held together by the clear tones of Lara's violin.
