Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
"Celebrations in my World" is a series that covers more than forty holidays from around the world. Planting trees is critical to replacing trees that are cut down for products such as lumber and paper or that have been cleared to open up farm and grazing lands. The Arbor Day celebration began in 1854 when Julius Morton encouraged others to plant trees. The celebration began in Nebraska and soon moved to other states. The push to keep expanding attention came from Birdsey Northrop who traveled abroad to spread the word about the importance of forests and Arbor Day. At this point in the text, readers learn why trees are so important to the well-being of the earth and to those who occupy it. By 1920 the entire US was celebrating Arbor Day, now officially the last Friday in April. Other countries such as Canada, China, Japan, United Kingdom, Israel, Namibia and India also celebrate the holiday. This particular holiday is easy to understand and it should encourage kids to think environmentally and become actively involved in tree planting. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
