Overview

Arcadi Volodos gives virtuosos a good name. Following up on his acclaimed disc of TRANSCRIPTIONS, Sony now presents us with a death-defying program of romantic works by Liszt, Scriabin, Rachmaninov, and Schumann recorded live at Carnegie Hall in October 1998. But despite his digital wizardry, virtuosity is never the whole point. In his ear-opening version of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15, Volodos shows he's a master of tonal color; he's one of the few pianists to play this work without banging. Scriabin's poetically enigmatic Tenth Sonata is given its full measure of emotional density, and Volodos gives Schumann's "Bunte Blätter" tender intimacy, as if he's telling a story to a baby. Still in his 20s, this impressively accomplished pianist has a brilliant future before him.
