good content, but it makes you wonder...

I really like how WotC have put a great deal of effort into making high-quality, good-looking materials for playing D&D 4e. The game is easier to start with newbies AND still has a lot of room for growth. However, I can't help but to think that it was rushed to press and perhaps the Players Handbook (PHB) was a bit THIN on content, as a way for WotC to continue to beg for us to give them anothe $30-$40 every month for new rulebooks. Arcane Power is OK, but maybe all the power sources should have been defined a year ago, and an annual compendium could be released containing updates and additions for all the power sources. Back when I played AD&D 1.0, I was quite happy with 1 lousy PHB and 1 DMG and 1 Monster Manual. According to WotC, I need to buy a new bookshelf for all the shovelware they're releasing.

    I Also Recommend:

    awesome

I really enjoyed this expansion of the d&d roleplayting game it was very helpful to me in increasing my wizards abilites. If you play and have a character that uses arcane ablities i would highly sugest you pick this one up.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Addition to the Series

This is a great book for players looking to expand the abilities and background of arcane powered characters. It is set up just like the Martial Power with new powers for each of the arcane powered classes. This is a must have for anyone playing 4th Ed D&D

    Big addition for arcane characters!

What Martial Power does for martial characters, Arcane Power does for arcane chacters - if anything, even better. Includes new builds and powers for Wizards, Warlocks, Swordmages, Sorcerors, and Bards - pretty much what it says on the tin. Most of the new builds offer a lot of flavor as well as potential power: chaos sorcery, vestige pact, and so forth. Of course, new paragon paths for each class, a few epic destinies, and lots of feats all around.A few pages of rituals rounds out the book.

The feats are quite shiny and go a good ways toward bringing back the general utility and variety that wizards had in previous editions. All PH/PH2 races have their specific feats at each tier. Also, a selection of new multiclass feats oprovide new options for those who want a piece of the arcane action.

All arcane characters can now take a familiar by spending a feat, and there are additional feats to add abilities and bonuses beyond the basic familiar. Familiars are small spirit-creatures which come in variety of forms (mostly small animals), each offering slightly different bonuses, and can either be safely hidden in 'passive' mode, or can take a more active role but be exposed to danger (don't worry, they return after a rest). These seem to be a flavorful and viable option for a character, useful but not overpowering.

All in all, a worthy addition to the fine line of 4th edition books. I recommend this book very highly to anyone who might be interested in playing or GMing for an arcane character.
