This book is lacking compared to Veiled Eyes and Disembodied Bones (books 1 and 2 of the Lake People series). There was over development of some plot points and then abrubt realizations that are just spelled out for the reader. It was a good enough read, but not as satisfying as the previous Lake People books.

I have read many of C.L.Bevill's books starting with veiled eyes, the first in her lake people series, and I am never disappointed. Her cat clan series is also great. She has great strong female heroins. I'm always on the lookout for more by this author.

I really enjoyed this mystery. It was a great way to spend a wintery afternoon. I loved the ending and was pleasantly surprised with how it tied in to the first novel. If you enjoy a plot with twists, turns and a little magic, this is a must read! I was cheering on Christian and Jane all the way. I hope there will be more from the Lake People!

I saw that some people did not like this book as much as some of the others in the series. Maybe it has been too long since I read the others, but I enjoyed this one very much. It was different, that's for sure. The book starts out with a man hurrying to save the woman that he loves when he hears her screams in his head. Now this is not unusual for the Lake People. Many of them can "hear" other family members or loved ones in their heads if they are fairly close by. When the man takes the woman to a "witch" to save her life, that is a little unusual. It seems this witch owes the family a favor. Now the book goes forward in time to a woman who is trying to free herself from her captor in the middle of a traffic jam. We are introduced to "Jane Doe" as she flees into traffic and ends up in the hospital. She has no idea who she is, or who her captor was. She is alone and nobody seems to really believe her story. On top of that, there are people, and a big, bad "dog," after her. She does not know who to trust, or why people keep trying to capture her. This is not even including the voice in her head that keeps telling her to run. I think you will enjoy this tale that includes witches, along with other New Orleans voodoo/hoodoo creatures.

Good read! Paranormal romance and mystery. This book felt a little slow in places and then rushed. Having read other books by Ms Bevill I was really surprised that the "lake people" didn't find the couple considering what a close net community they are. The ending was good and a bit of a surprise. I think most readers will enjoy this book!
