Overview

Changes in the legal landscape of heritage management in recent decades have forced a dramatic change in the practice of archaeological surveying. Reacting to public and private development, the surveyor now is expected to accurately inventory and assess the cultural resources of a region and provide guidance for their preservation and management. Gregory G. White and Thomas F. King have distilled decades of experience in survey work to provide students, field novices, and land managers with a handy introduction to the strategies, methods, and logic of contemporary practice. In addition to explaining the legal and historical context for this endeavor, the book provides a heavily illustrated practical guide to the nuts and bolts of conducting a survey. This included everything from what equipment to bring into the field to how to read a compass. The volume is a perfect reference for an archaeological methods class, field school, or research library.

I currently work with Dr. White on an archaeology project in northern Nevada and I can tell you that he certainly lives and works by everything in his book. Dr. White is very knowledgeable concerning field work and the most efficient way to complete an archaeological survey. I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to learn the right way to do field survey and for anyone that wants to learn some new tips and tricks that could make their lives easier.
