Archie, the dapper dog who debuted in 2012’s Archie, is about to head out on a trip, but first he’s having a long dark night of the soul. Dreams of sunshine and ice-cream cones morph into imagined scenes of torrential downpours, leading Archie to leap out of bed to add the necessary items to his suitcase. “Hail? Rain? Snow? Hurricane?” reads his midnight stream-of-consciousness narration. “More socks! Yes!” Subsequent dreams-turned-nightmares about illness and near drowning lead to further overpacking, until Archie’s suitcase explodes with an enormous foldout “BANG!” Although Archie doesn’t exactly embrace the simple life in the end, his solution to the busted suitcase dilemma will still provoke some chuckles. Ages 2–5. (Mar.)
From the Publisher
"Dog lovers, travelers and fans of Gordon’s felted animals will find this amusing. Bon voyage!" —Kirkus Reviews

"Images composed of soft, warmly sketchy figures combine with the gentle comedy to create an instantly endearing character." —Booklist

"Sure to make young readers laugh." —Library Media Connection

"Archie, with its spare, creamy pages and eye-catching, hand-lettered cover, was clearly designed for reading pleasure and also for display. Gordon’s fine watercolors capture the various dogs’ personalities and styles with aplomb, and an unmistakable eye for cut and pattern." —The New York Times on Archie

"The mostly wordless pages of Domenica More Gordon's Archie have a careless, watercolor chic that brings to mind the wonderful lightness of fashion sketches. It's an amusing approach for a picture book. . . . Small children aren't the only ones who will get a kick out of the humorous conceit of this elegant debut." —The Wall Street Journal on Archie

"The clothes make the dog in this nearly wordless, tongue-in-cheek homage to fashion and the power of creativity. . . . A tail-wagging delight for budding Coco Chanels everywhere." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review, on Archie

"[Gordon's] visual storytelling is already marvelously accomplished. . . . A winning premise; it's a distinctively British pairing, somewhere between Jeeves and Wooster and Wallace and Gromit." —Publishers Weekly, starred review, on Archie

Archie, that styling, designing dog, is back, this time preparing for a little holiday (Archie, 2012). At the beginning of this nearly wordless book, readers see big dog Archie and his terrier buddy start to pack. Clothing goes in first. A nap brings on inevitable dreams—of bad weather, hunger, illness, sports—which then leads to the bane of travelers (and their suitcases) everywhere: overpacking. How will the ice cream, clothing, vitamins, goggles, windbreaker and everything else find a spot? The handwritten text includes even more: "Shark cage! Submarine? Blow-up Loch Ness Monster." A double gatefold opens to the sight of everything, from Thermos to wellies to sunscreen bursting out of the suitcase in one dramatic BANG! This leaves Archie with a brilliant idea: just put on layer after layer, fill his yellow, many-pocketed trench coat and head to the beach with suitcase safely closed. There is not much plot here, but there is lots of action and humor. The terrier watches Archie with interest and joins human readers in seeing the silliness of Archie's predicament. After all, all the little pup needs is a ball. Judging from the final picture, both dogs have all they need. Dog lovers, travelers and fans of Gordon's felted animals will find this amusing. Bon voyage! (Picture book. 2-5)

Gr 1–3—What starts with Archie packing for a carefree vacation soon turns into a frenetic, anxiety-inducing nightmare as the dapper canine prepares for every contingency imaginable…until his suitcase explodes. The only text that appears in this story are Archie's musings about what could happen on his vacation and what he must remember to bring. "Lightning? Thunder? Waterproof everything!" While the sketch and watercolor illustrations and kooky items lend an air of humor to the story, the panic of packing will likely be lost on the intended audience.—Jenna Boles, Greene County Public Library, Beavercreek, OH
