In Arctic Adventure he writes of seal and polar bear hunts; surviving starvation; meeting people who'd resorted to cannibalism; and of the moving experience of seeing the sun after three months of winter darkness. Freuchen's warmth, wit, and literary talent make this book stand out; it is a rich human saga. (6 x 9, 432 pages, b&w photos)

Great Book and Definitely Among the Absolute Best Adventure/Travel Books I've Ever Read; With his warm respect and acceptance of the Inuit culture and people, Peter Freuchen stands apart from other Western explorers. His life in the Arctic, as detailed in this book, is truly remarkable with its hardships, stunning landscapes, and hints of humor. Freuchen founded Thule, a Greenland Inuit trading post, and he lived there for fifteen years during which he lived as a native and established a family. While he lived in the Arctic, each departure from camp proved risky, and in many cases, he escaped fatal starvation and frostbite by the skin of his teeth—except for once he didn’t escape harm.
In addition to his thrilling tales of survival, Freuchen, unlike so many other explorers, commands a captivating prose style. Arctic Adventure is ideal for travel lovers or anyone seeking an insightful look at people living on the edge. Occasionally the book reflects the sexism or limited attitudes of its time, but it’s remarkably timelss. This is one of the better books I’ve ever read, and certainly among the very best or maybe the best “adventure/travel books. I’m confident you’ll love this one.
