Overview

World-class photographer and science writer Wayne Lynch takes us to one of his favorite parts of the world: the Arctic. Using a plant, an animal or a phenomenon for each letter of the alphabet, Lynch describes the unique ways in which systems for living differ where temperature and light can be amazingly extreme. But Lynch also dispels the myth of the Arctic as a perpetually frozen landscape by introducing us to the birds, mammals, insects and plant life that thrive in the short yet glorious sun-filled days of summer.

Editorial Reviews

Booklist - Carolyn Phelan
Exceptionally fine photos, one on each page, illustrate the text. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say to say that two or three paragraphs of text accompany each photo. In any case, the overall effect is of visiting an unfamiliar landscape accompanied by a knowledgeable and communicative uncle.

This small book written for young children is about both plant and animal life in the Arctic, a subject that is rarely covered or discussed in school classrooms. The color photographs, together with the straightforward text, both inform and delight as they present the variety of wildlife in the Arctic. From beluga whales to kittiwakes to zooplankton, author Wayne Lynch brings the beauty and excitement of the Arctic region to every reader, young and adult alike. Readers of this book are exposed to these littleknown wonders found in the "Land of the Midnight Sun."

The author then goes on to describe various animals, such as the caribou, eagle, fox, narwhal, owl, polar bear, musk ox, and walrus, as well as their natural habitats. Beautiful color photographs of each animal and plant accompany the text. In addition to describing the wildlife, the author relates other aspects of the Arctic, including facts about glaciers, hibernation, the aurora borealis, and birds such as the raven, tern, owl, duck, and goose. Also described are such plants as lousewort and lichens, including xanthoria. Highly Recommended, Grades 36, Teaching Professional, General Audience. REVIEWER: Dr. Lowell J.
