Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura J. Brown
Arctic Peoples is one of a ten book series about the native populations of North America. The introduction of each book defines who the first people in North America were and where they came from. Each book contains detailed information about the environment so readers can appreciate what members of the First Nations had to do to live and thrive where they settled. The Arctic Peoples lived in an extreme environment and adapted their lifestyle to survive and thrive in their environment. The Arctic region is one of the harshest on Earth. It is cold and icy there nine months out of the year. It is nearly impossible to plant crops there because the ground is frozen solid and covered with ice and snow. Family relationships, daily living, hunting, clothes, games, and religious beliefs were all ways they pass down family traditions and spent the winter months in their dwellings. Readers will learn how the Arctic Peoples survived daily and how they handled being with different kinds of people. Readers will enjoy learning about this cultural group and what they have contributed to the United States culture and economy. Each book in the series is excellent and a wonderful resource which includes pictures of the environment and members of the First Nations. Reviewer: Laura J. Brown
