School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—These titles purport to educate children about the differences in the seasons. However, the information is so broad that it can be confusing for young readers to follow, and there isn't enough substance for older report writers. For example, under the topic "Fall Weather," there are no explanations as to why the temperatures get cooler at that time of year. There are just descriptive sentences such as "Wind whooshes through the trees. Dead leaves float and spiral as they blow to the ground." Glossary terms are neither defined in context nor set in boldface when they appear. The stock photos in both books do little to entice readers into the texts. Sara L. Latta's What Happens in Spring (Enslow, 2006) or Darlene R. Stille's Simply Science: Fall and Simply Science: Spring (both Compass Point, 2001) are better choices.—Lisa Gangemi Kropp, Half Hollow Hills Community Library, Dix Hills, NY
Children's Literature - Laura Backman
Crisp, dry leaves make crunching sounds. Squirrels swish their bushy tails as they gather acorns. Leaves turn bright orange, red, and yellow. Do you know what season it is? It is fall! With eye-catching photographs, energetic designs, and engaging text and format, young readers are sure to be captivated. The vivid language and dynamic design will keep pages turning and the book's big sturdy design allows for shared reading. This nonfiction title, part of the "Lightening Bolt Books" Series, is robust with information and strongly connects to early childhood curriculum. Children will learn why leaves change color, a variety of everyday fall activities, and signs of the season in text that support beginning and emergent readers. In addition to nonfiction book features such as a table of contents, captions, glossary, and an index, this title contains back matter, including a list for further reading and a website link for student activities related to the seasons. This title brings fall to life. Reviewer: Laura Backman
