Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2

In a refreshing reversal of their usual roles, the often-despondent Gerald proves to be a valuable friend to exuberant Piggie when her own naturally sunny disposition fails her. Fretful about the sudden rain that threatens to ruin an afternoon of running, skipping, and jumping, Piggie declares emphatically that she is "not a happy pig." Poor Gerald patiently weathers the rain and her brief tantrum and, as readers might expect, the pair soon make the most of the situation. Alive with movement and feeling, the illustrations tell the story, setting the tone and adding depth to the simple text. The words themselves are manageable for young readers, and these endearing and distinctly developed characters have great child appeal. With a cameo appearance by the Pigeon on the final endpaper, this is a winning addition to the author's canon.-Neala Arnold, St. Francis Elementary School, MN

    Instant Hit!

This is a great book for emergent readers. My kindergartener and 4 year old loved this book the first time through and my kindergartener loves to read it aloud to family. The story is very easy to follow and my young children are able to relate to the characters because the characters' facial expressions/body language are open to interpretation! The pictures help my eager reader figure out words she's unfamiliar with. This is also a great book to ask prediction/comprehension questions with... Great find!

Funny, engaging-Great book for adults and kids.

I've enjoyed the adventures of Piggie and Gerald. These books teach about sharing, adversity, friendship and humor. I've shared them with the teachers at my preschool and the children love them. The facial expressions on Piggie and Gerald are priceless. Great for parents to read to their kids. I look forward to more adventures.

Fun, Interactive Story and Cute characters

My 20 month old daughter took to Gerald and Piggie right away! The story is engaging with lots to talk about even when not reading. (rain, play, pigs, elephants) Also, she loves the title so when she wakes up on a sunny day we often ask, "Are you ready to play outside!?" This is met with an enthusiastic "Yes!" The lessons in the books are great, too. Sometimes rain is ok and sometimes it's not. Friends are great to have around to help you when you are down. There is always a way to make a bad situation better. The list goes on. We are excited to purchase out next Piggie and Gerald tale - this was a great start to our collection!

    LOVE IT!!!

My son and I are HUGE fans of Gerald and Piggie, they are so silly, and they always teach a good lesson. We can't say enough, Mo Willems can always be counted on to give a great story, simple and funny pictures for the kids to look at and "read" and easy words for the beginning reader too. We have almost all of the elephant and piggie books and will continue to collect them as long as they are written!
