Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Like any curious bear cub, little Una would like to explore the great outdoors. But when her mother tells her to go back to sleep until spring comes, she only slumbers a few days before waking and setting out in the snow on her own in search of this mysterious thing called spring. With gentle humor and warmth reminiscent of P. D. Eastman's Are You My Mother? Una journeys through the woods asking moose, woodpecker, wolf cub and rabbit if they, in fact, are spring. Returning to the cave without success, Mother Bear shares tales of springtime and the wondrous bounty that awaits Una and her little brother. Children will excitedly relate to Una's curiosity and eagerness, and will delight at their own knowledge of what springtime is all about. This "Share-a-Story" book features ideas for storytelling as well as activities for interactive reading. Instructions such as how to create a little bear den and plant seeds for sprouting will encourage role-playing and hands-on learning. The soft watercolor illustrations suit this gentle, playful tale. The instructional segment is illustrated with colorful photographs of children engaged in these fun and simple activities. 2000, Dorling Kindersley, $5.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Karen Deans

PreS-Gr 1-A successful approach to teaching an abstract concept. A little bear cub, anxious to leave the den, believes that spring is another animal that will come into her world soon. She asks a moose, a woodpecker, and a wolf cub, "Are you Spring?" Each one tells her a typical sign of the season to look for. After a close call with a wolf, the cub's mother offers her own point of view of what spring is: "Green leaves sprout on trees, wild flowers open in the grass, and blueberries swell, so juicy and purple, especially for bears to eat." Wright's watercolor artwork depicts the anthropomorphized animals in their natural positions and does a good job of evoking the changing seasons. Some basic read-aloud hints ("Snoooore like sleeping bears") and follow-up activities are included. A suitable selection to share with a child or a group, especially when spring is just around the corner.-Sharon R. Pearce, Geronimo Public School, OK Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
