CriticasK-Gr 2-Having heard her siblings' stories about how wonderful it is to enter a book and become a part of the action, six-year-old Maria grows curious about the experience. When her mother takes her to the library, she jumps on a book, does a handstand on its pages, and lowers it slowly to her head. But it is only when she lies down to read it that she loses herself in the story. When her mother tells her it's time to go home, Maria emerges from the beach story she was reading with shiny eyes and sand in her shoes. The illustrations, in strong colors with bold, black outlines, take up about three-quarters of each page. The figures are contemporary and stylish. The straightforward text employs age-appropriate language that will encourage new readers to stay on task. Highly recommended for all collections serving this age group.
