Overview

Shattered after surviving a boating accident that killed her husband and two children, Eve Miller lies in an Australian hospital, physically recovering yet emotionally dead. But life wants her back and it barges into her room in the form of flamboyant fellow patient, opera singer Isabel Stein. The renowned diva offers to let Eve stay at her country estate outside New York City, where she can recuperate from her injuries and hopefully elude the press who continue to hound her for details of her family tragedy. It is there that Eve meets Noah, Isabel’s protégé (and, perhaps, younger lover?) – a moody composer whose sorrow seems to match Eve’s own. Soon Eve finds herself drawn to the enigmatic Noah as well as the emotionally heightened world of opera. Gradually Eve allows herself to open up to opera’s magnificent drama, and discovers there is more going on behind the scenes than she knows. This remarkable debut explores women’s relationships, the nature of fame, and the forces that keep us going in the face of heartbreak, helping us find a way to heal.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
STARRED REVIEW - "Segal's exceptional debut suggests that fame wanted or not takes its toll no matter how it is acquired…. With razor-sharp insight and adroit imagery, Segal masterfully builds layers of tension by methodically exposing her tragically flawed characters' true motives."
Library Journal
“The characters in Segal's haunting, beautifully written first novel are fully realized, vibrant, and believable."
The New York Times
“Hypnotic...unpredictable…an engrossing novel that takes on big ideas like the dark side of human nature and the perils of fame.”
Dallas Morning News
“A sophisticated meditation on music, grief, and the bond of mother and child, as well as ambition, power, and betrayal….Segal’s writing sparkles with originality…Her imagery is precise, a bit satirical…a tender story of one woman’s odyssey of rediscovery.”
Philadelphia Inquirer
“Eloquent and riveting, soulful and surprising”

A passionate, heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting novel about a woman who becomes famous through a horrendously personal tragedy. Struggling to maintain her hold on life after a devastating boating accident kills her husband and two small children, she rediscovers through new relationships, unwanted celebrity, and a deep passion for music, the power of family to help her heal. Loved this one! Judy E.

Segal's character-work is a wonder to behold -- there's a Joyce-like complexity to these people, and a complex structure to her prose. Even out-of-context sentences read like stories unto themselves. You see the word "haunting" in a lot of these reviews for reason. ARIA sticks with you.

    I loved it!

It made me laugh and cry. I didn't want to finish it (in a good way) because I didn't want it to be over! I couldn't put it down. I related to the story in a lot of ways. I don't want to give anything away but this is a great story of trying to coming back from a deep and sudden loss. I love it and will definitely read again and again.

    Really??!

I took this book up thinking, with all of the great reviews, it must be good. I did not scroll down far enough to one which gave the book a bad review. Had I, I would not have succumed to the others. The main character is self absorbed. All of the characters are. It was a good read for a bit but then I started to say to myself, I can not stand these people especially the main character. This book belongs in the trash. It really is just trash. How do some of these writers get published?
