Overview

George Grote (1794-1871), was a well-known historian of Greece and parliamentarian. His "Aristotle" (1872) was the result of many years of study, following the publication of "The History of Greece" (1846-56) and "Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates" (1865, 3 vols). At the time of writing, such a comprehensive account of the subject had never before been attempted and "Aristotle" remains one of the most important contributions to the history of ancient thought.

Grote's "Aristotle" was to remain unfinished at his death, and the first edition was published under the editorship of Alexander Bain and G. Croom Robertson a year later. The second edition, reprinted here in two volumes, was published in 1880 with the addition of two important essays on the "Ethics" and the "Politics" of Aristotle, the material for which was discovered among Grote's papers. To the chapters on the life of Aristotle, the Aristotlean canon and a critical study of the logical treatises, the editors added a section on De Anima, orginally published in Bain's "Senses and Intellect" (1868). The Appendix contains four papers rerpinted from Bain's "Mental and Moral Science" (1868). These writings were collated by the editors from Grote's notes and references.
