Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This visually appealing book combines many beautiful color and black-and-white photos with ten chapters of text, to present the history, geography, archaeology, flora, fauna and culture of Arizona. An index, timeline, fast facts section and reference section (which includes books, web sites and useful addresses) are included. While the book is attractive, it contains many errors; too many to include in this brief review. An example of some of the more serious follow—The Zuni Pueblo is described more than once in the text, and shown on several maps, as being in Arizona, while it is really located in New Mexico. (It is interesting that Zuni does not appear in the index.) On page 14, Hohokam pit houses are described as being "dug into the ground," when they were not. Most archaeologists do not think that the Salado was a subgroup of the Anasazi. The Salado did not move in with the Hohokam. On page 90, the Fort Apache Reservation is listed as belonging to the Navajo, which is strange, because it then says that it has an Apache Cultural Center. It also says that it has casinos, while a previous page states that Navajos do not have casinos. Of course, this reservation, as its name implies, does not belong to the Navajo, but to the Apache. Part of the "America the Beautiful" second series. 2000, Children's Press/Grolier, $33.00. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Gisela Jernigan
