Children's Literature
This exceptionally well designed and visually appealing book combines many striking color photos with lively informative text to present the Grand Canyon State. Beginning with a chapter about its canyons and deserts, the book continues with chapters concerning Arizona's history, government and economy, people, achievements and landmarks. An especially useful State Survey section includes state identifications, the state song, a timeline, a calendar of celebrations, famous Arizonians and fun facts. The author very nicely highlights the contradictions and surprises about the state, and negative characteristics are included along with the state's attractions, such as its environmental and economic problems. The unusually interesting text incorporates many quotes from people of both the past and the present. An introduction, index, maps, songs, a recipe, a legend and bibliography are included. Part of the "Celebrate the States" series. 2000, Benchmark Books, $35.64. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Gisela Jernigan
Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Part of a series titled "Celebrate the States," this handsome volume is dedicated to the 48th state in the United States: Arizona. Its six chapters cover geography, history, people, government, economy, and landmarks, describing each in readable text with stunning photographic illustrations. Each chapter includes clear and easily deciphered maps, sidebars describing special features in each of the main topics, and well-researched facts. Special features include the words and music to several songs, a recipe for a regional favorite food, and quotes from notable Arizonans. At the end of the book, in addition to a nice index, there is a "State Survey" that lists the important facts about the state such as the name origin and the geographical details. There is also a timeline with important dates in the state's history, a calendar of annual events, and a list of famous natives of the state. A list of "must-see" tourist attractions, a bibliography, and some fun facts round out the book. Geared toward a junior high aged audience, this book would make a nice addition to most school libraries. Reviewer: Ellen Welty

Gr 4-7-These overviews of state history, geography, industry, and economy feature clearly written, well-organized texts lavishly illustrated with excellent-quality photographs. Covering approximately the same scope as the "America the Beautiful" series (Children's), these books feature larger maps, good-sized, clear reproductions of the state flags and seals, and the words and music to the state songs, all of which give this series a slight edge over others. Quotes from residents add a personal dimension to the lively, lucid texts. Sidebars offer detailed information on specific topics and descriptive captions accompany the illustrations. Each book also includes a local recipe and lists of state and geographical facts, a calendar of celebrations, information on famous citizens, and a useful index. The brief "Find Out More" sections include books, videos, and Web sites. Attractive assets to any library.-Donna L. Scanlon, Lancaster Area Library, PA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
