Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This lighthearted, understated story focuses on a community of anthropomorphized animals as they respond to rainy days in Oklahoma. Generous and caring, Armadillo loves to retreat to the quiet solitude of his den when it rains. His neighbors--prairie dogs, mice and rabbits--fear that since they rarely see him in this inclement weather, he might be sad and lonely then. But they soon discover Armadillo's secret and learn how to share the simple pleasures of curling up in ``the right spot'' with a candle and a book until sleep beckons. Monsell portrays restrained yet deep feelings here with a comfortingly quiet, almost old-fashioned air, and her characters call to mind Lobel's beloved Frog and Toad. Young readers will be especially charmed by the soft, warm-toned watercolors that reassuringly evoke both rainswept plains and snug candlelit interiors. Ages 3-6. (Sept.)

K-Gr 2-- Although he is rarely seen, generous Armadillo is a favorite among his Oklahoma neighbors. Whenever the sun shines, they find his thoughtful gifts of warm nuts, flowers, and such outside their doorways. When the rains come, though, there is no sign of him at all, and the prairie dogs, rabbits, and mice worry that he his sad or lonely. Little Armadillo is snoozing in his cozy burrow, however, quite content to be alone. When his well-meaning friends prepare a meal and keep watch outside his door, Armadillo awakens, and is touched by their concern. And from then on, when the rain comes, all gather in the burrow, where they visit with Armadillo until he falls asleep. Learning that different people find contentment in different ways is the point of this refreshing story. Although puzzled at first, the animals come to appreciate their friend's unique habits. Themes of tolerance and caring are woven throughout the narrative. The illustrations in charcoal, pencil, and watercolor feature appealing characters in richly colored scenes. The damp outdoors is nicely contrasted with the warm interior of Armadillo's home. This is a winning choice for early readers as well as for story hours. --Virginia E.
