Armando's Fire

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Chilean-born guitarist Oscar Lopez now lives in chilly Calgary, Canada, but that hasn't cooled his Latin fire. Armando's Fire opens on a teasing note with the title track. A rain stick suggests a tropical shower, while piano, Latin percussion, and bird calls set the scene of a Latin nightclub. Lopez's guitar begins the passionate Latin melody, supported by synth strings and a freight train of drums. Pianist Kevin Randolph takes away the melody, then Orbert Davis blares to the edge of the atmosphere with his trumpet. The band sings "Ar-MAN-do!" as the song whirls to a frenzied finale. Lopez offers sultrier sounds as well, such as the perfect hand-holding music of "Walking Through the Pyramid." "Chile" begins with a vivid picture of plains so vast that you can almost see the birds fly over the horizon, and then gallops valiantly with spectacular guitar work and a flurry of bass Sharay Reed, drums Calvin Rodgers, and Latin percussion Alejo Poveda. "Gypsy Soul" and "Dance of the Sun" ride the free flamenco spirit, showcasing Lopez's silvery tones and pristine technique, even on the most blisteringly fast passages. The album has some drum programming and patterned grooves -- the fanciful "Romance" is a multilayered delight -- but it always explodes with the kick of a live performance. Lopez's deliciously fluttering guitar ends the album with "Emotions," the tender prelude exploding in a dynamic flamenco flare-up, then breathing its last with an intriguing weave of tender melodies. It's irresistible.
