Overview

In this unique tribute to home cooking, Lela Nargi gathers around the table an array of women, from biologists and book editors to mathematicians and marketers, to discover why they feel that everything important in life-creativity, patience, time alone, time with others, nourishment both physical and spiritual-lies in the simple act of preparing a meal.

As they offer their favorite recipes, the fifteen women featured in this book describe the foods their mothers and grandmothers made for them and tell how they carry on the tradition of lovingly providing sustenance-and so much more-for their own families. Full of mouth-watering home-cooked recipes and stories of the quirky family food traditions that gave birth to them, Around the Table will delight any woman who relishes the act of putting food on the table for the people she loves.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Using information gathered from one-on-one interviews, Nargi (Knitting Lessons: Tales from the Knitting Path) describes how 15 different American women experience food and cooking. Only one of the women has a professional culinary connection, while the rest have careers in business, academic, and literary fields (and include YA author Nancy Butcher). Their remembrances of past events, family traditions, and favorite meals adequately illustrate the importance of food in people's daily lives and relationships. Also shared are several favorite recipes, some passed down from older relatives and others adapted from recipes found in cookbooks. Unfortunately, the women's individual voices do not come through-one is always aware of Nargi's editorial presence. This prevents the book from being more than a pleasant collection of memoirs and recipes. A preferable, more insightful and evocative read would be Maya Angelou's recent Hallelujah! The Welcome Table: A Lifetime of Memories with Recipes. An optional purchase for public libraries.-Andrea R. Dietze, Orange Cty. P.L., Santa Ana, CA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
