Aroused: A Collection of Erotic Writing

Overview

While posing for Playboy magazine, freelance Bill of Rights defender Karen Finley was told, while chocolate dripped down her nipples, that her smirk wasn't "Playboy sexy." When writing for nerve.com, the so-called erotic on line magazine, she was told she would need to replace the word "cock" with something – something less objectionable? Having heard her friends complain of similar silliness Karen has invited them to write "whatever the hell you want" to reawaken this "exhausted topic." Aroused is an anthology ...

Having heard her friends complain of similar silliness Karen has invited them to write "whatever the hell you want" to reawaken this "exhausted topic." Aroused is an anthology of erotica, sexual culture, passionate texts, sensual encounters and essays on gender bending, neurotic erotic lust, school girl antics, coming of age, and first times, ranging from personal gratification to denying gratification, control, submission, possession, and jealousy, with race, age, and economics thrown in for a more heightened emotional response. Aroused defies our now familiar compartmentalization of sexuality and the erotic hit list of specialties: the best of lesbian erotica, the best of the new erotica, the best of old man and the sea erotica, famous person tattoo erotica, eclectic, esoteric erotica…

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Edited by performance artist Karen Finley and with an introduction by Richard Hell, Aroused runs the erotic gamut fiction, drama, poems, essays and several pieces that defy categorization. (There are photos, too: director John Waters's offering is a series called "Twelve Assholes and a Dirty Foot.") The contributors from Wallace Shawn, Mary Gaitskill and bell hooks to Annie Sprinkle, Lydia Lunch and Richard Lewis are as diverse as the subject matter, which ranges from cybersex to autofellatio. Irreverent, hip, intelligent and frequently kinky, here is a welcome break from the one-note erotic anthologies that currently proliferate. ( Dec.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Finley (Pooh Unplugged: An Unauthorized Memoir, not reviewed, etc.) told her fellow contributors to this anthology of erotica that they could write absolutely anything, and this daft pile of literary whiffle, some of it serious, drifts as far from Henry James as words allow. Linda M. Montano's "Once Upon a Time" mixes the Prodigal Son's return home with his Ascent to the Union of Love by way of recipes for Chai, Keer, Chapati, Basmati rice, and Cashew Rice with Peas. Wallace Shawn pulls out his 1975 battle-of-the-sexes one-act play, The Youth Hostel, while John Waters treats us to photographs of "12 Assholes and a Dirty Foot." Feminist poet bell hooks relates the writing of poetry to her "Penis Passion" and "Gimme Some Dick." Finley swallows her confrontational side but reveals all with "He Delivers! A Straight Woman Looks at Gay Male Porn." Famed fetishists also on hand: Hubert Selby Jr., Annie Sprinkle, and Vagina Davis. Curiouser and curiouser as the contributors take us down their private pleasure warrens.
