Overview

Winner of the Illustrated Book of the Year award in 1994, The Art Book has been an outstanding success and has become a well-known event in the art book world. Now published in over twenty different languages and in a miniature edition, it has received rave reviews from numerous newspapers and magazines and has made many appearances on the bestseller lists. Complemented by The 20th Century Art Book (see page 50), its unique approach brings art alive.

An A to Z guide to 500 great painters and sculptors from medieval to modern times, it debunks art historical classifications by throwing together brilliant examples of all periods, schools, visions and techniques. Each artist is represented by a full-page colour plate of a definitive work, accompanied by explanatory and illuminating information on the image and its creator. Glossaries of artistic movements and technical terms are included, making this a valuable work of reference as well as a feast for the eyes. By breaking with traditional classifications, The Art Book presents a fresh and original approach to art: an unparalleled visual sourcebook and a celebration of our rich and multi-faceted culture.

This edition presents an easy-to-use alphabetical guide to 500 of the world's greatest painters and sculptors, accompanied by a full-page color plate for each artist.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Delia A. Culberson
This handy art guide is a feast for the eyes with large, vivid color plates on every page that showcase the great talent, vision, and style of five hundred masterful painters and sculptors from the Middle Ages to the present. The book's format, in alphabetical order of artists, makes for a fascinating contrast of art movements, schools, and periods, often juxtaposing radically different works, e.g., a vibrant expressionistic abstraction by England's Peter Lanyon (1918-1954) next to a luminous Baroque painting by France's Georges de La Tour (1593-1652). The knowledgeable commentary on each artist and work featured is an enlightening complement to the illustrations. The works are cross-referenced, and each is well described with date, medium, size, and present location. Glossaries of technical terms and artistic movements and a directory of museums and galleries are included. On the minus side, the extremely small print in this thick trade paperback may discourage even the most avid reader. Also, more complete data on the artists themselves would have been helpful. Vital statistics are given as well as towns of birth, and for American artists, native states are included; but in all cases, countries of origin are omitted. It almost is universally known in what countries major centers such as Paris, London, or Berlin, are; less well-known sites such as Bruhl, Scorel, and Bruchy, for instance, are more difficult to place. The nationality of many artists is mentioned in the text, but it is omitted for quite a few others, so the reader will have to look elsewhere for this information. This eye-catching book is sure to attract the attention of art lovers and even casual browsers. Although not an in-depth manual, it will give young adults a panoramic view of art through the ages and will likely motivate some into further study of this wonderfully creative field. Young adult librarians may wish to consider it as an additional purchase, but before buying, do take a look at the large, hardback edition (Chronicle, 1994); it is certainly easier to read, and a truly beautiful volume. Glossary. Illus.

    Perfect Art Sampler

For a simple of overview of art and artists, for the novice or for the professional, this book covers it all. It gives a simple over view of all the artwork you know, thought you knew or wish you knew. As a middle school and high school art teacher, this book has been invaluable to my students. All the icons of Western art are there from 'Mona Lisa' to 'Marilyn'. Buy this book!

    Wonderful!

The Art Book is a wonderful resource for the expert or the mildly interested giving short but thorough biographies of the artists involved and some background on the works featured. Pictures are absolutely glorious but I still give this book only 4 stars out of pure greed- I wanted more!

Easy to use, full of art.

Its small size, wide selection of artists, and illustrations makes this book incredibly handy. The book is well organized and provides an easy-access to the best artists. This is a great book to have, especially for teachers.
